Thursday, Aug 6 — Colony House at The Walker Theatre. We're opening the weekend in the classiest room in town. Friday, Aug 7 — Sixpence None The Richer at Barrelhouse Ballroom. Yes, that Sixpence None The Richer. The "Kiss Me" people. The band that owned every late-'90s prom slow dance and rom-com closing credit is bringing it to the Barrelhouse, and the room could not be a stranger, better fit. Barrelhouse bills itself as "Chattanooga's Premiere Live Music Venue" and runs on concrete floors and standing room built for intensity rather than polish — not the plush nostalgia box you'd picture for this bill. But that friction is the appeal. A band this melodic in a room this raw is the kind of mismatch that turns into a great night. Heads up: many Barrelhouse shows run 18+, so check before you bring the whole crew.
Saturday, Aug 8 — Sam Holt Band at Barrelhouse Ballroom. Barrelhouse doesn't waste a Saturday, and neither should you. The Sam Holt Band takes the same Southside stage at 1501 Long St for a night built for the room's strengths — floor space, volume, and a crowd that came to move rather than sit politely. If Friday's a nostalgia trip, Saturday's the palate cleanser: loud, present, and pointed straight at the standing floor.
Saturday, Aug 8 — Blake Worthington at Songbirds. And if the Barrelhouse volume isn't your speed, cross town to Songbirds for the weekend's quiet-power play. The listening room attached to that jaw-dropping vintage-guitar collection is where you go when you want to hear every note instead of feel every kick drum, and its Americana/blues/roots lean makes it the natural home for a songwriter's night. Blake Worthington gets a room that will actually shut up and listen — which, for the right artist, is the best gift a venue can give.
So there's your fork in the road for Saturday: sweat it out on the Barrelhouse floor with the Sam Holt Band, or settle into Songbirds and let Blake Worthington's set breathe. Both are the right answer. There is no wrong answer.
