Dumpstaphunk Brings New Orleans to the Big Room Friday — and Humboldt Gets the Warm-Up Slot It Deserves
Friday night, the Big Room is going to sweat. On Jul 17, Sierra Nevada's listening room hosts Dumpstaphunk — the New Orleans funk institution built around Ivan Neville and Ian Neville, sons of Aaron and Art "Poppa Funk" Neville respectively, with founding bassist Tony Hall throwing down the low end — and a room that usually rewards polite, seated attention is going to have a hard time staying in its chairs. Doors and show run into the evening; this is a 7 p.m. bill, and it's stacked.
Because here's the part the touring headline buries: the direct support is Object Heavy, and for a Northern California funk head, that's not an opener, that's a co-headliner in disguise. Object Heavy is Humboldt County's hardest-hitting soul band — a five-piece that has won the North Coast Journal's Best Original Band honors five times in eight years and cut its 2023 album Love & Gravity with Kelly Finnigan of the Monophonics behind the board. They play a bold, brass-knuckled Cadillac soul, all pocket and horns and Richard Love's gospel-sized vocals. Rounding out the bill is Starchild Jr. It is, top to bottom, one of the best-sequenced funk shows the North State will see all year.
What makes this a great Big Room booking specifically is the room. Dumpstaphunk plays sweaty clubs and muddy festival fields most of the year, where the low end turns to soup. The Big Room's sound system and its roughly 400-seat scale mean you'll actually hear the interplay — the two-bass conversations, the way Ivan Neville's organ curls around Hall's lines — instead of just feeling it in your sternum. Funk this precise deserves a room that can render it, and Chico happens to have one.
Zoom out and this show tells you something about how the regional scene actually works. A New Orleans legend routes through Chico on a summer Friday and, instead of importing a national opener, the booking reaches 200 miles northwest to Humboldt for the support. That's the North State talking to itself — the funk-and-soul corridor that runs from Arcata down through Chico and out to the Bay, a scene stitched together by bands who share bills, producers, and van routes. Finnigan's Monophonics, not coincidentally, headline this same Big Room in a couple of weeks. Nights like Friday are how a region proves it's more than a set of dots on a tour map.
If you've been sitting out the summer because your usual bar crowd is off somewhere with their parents, this is the show that gets you back out. Get a ticket, get there early enough to catch Object Heavy from the jump, and do not — under any circumstances — leave before the second encore. Funk bands like this one save the good stuff for the people who stay.
