A Field Guide to Cleveland's Live-Music Rooms
Cleveland gets the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, the induction galas, the tourists in Hard Rock T-shirts down on the lakefront. Fine. But the music that actually keeps this town upright happens in a handful of rooms where the beer is cold, the sightlines are honest, and the sound guy has heard every excuse. Here's your map.
Start on Waterloo Road in North Collinwood, at the Beachland Ballroom & Tavern (15711 Waterloo Rd.). Two stages under one roof: a 500-capacity Ballroom for the touring acts and a 148-cap Tavern for the sweaty, the weird, and the up-and-coming. It's been at it since March 2, 2000, and the kitchen leans local — an "old-school ballroom" with an American restaurant bolted on. If a band is breaking, they play the Tavern first and the Ballroom next time.
Up the hill in Cleveland Heights sits the Grog Shop (2785 Euclid Heights Blvd.), the club Kathy Blackman opened in 1992 and has run through a lost lease, a move, and roughly three decades of loud. Downstairs, the B Side Liquor Lounge handles the late-night DJ end. It's a low-ceilinged sweatbox in the best sense; national indie acts still route through it on the way up.
West of the river, Mahall's 20 Lanes (13200 Madison Ave., Lakewood) is exactly what it says: a working bowling alley with a roughly 350-cap music room attached, plus a smaller space called the Roxy. Punk, metal, ska, emo — if it's loud and comes with a merch table, it books here. There's a genuine pleasure to catching a powerviolence band forty feet from lane 12.
Down in the Flats, on the West Bank, the Music Box Supper Club (1148 Main Ave.) is the grown-up option: a downstairs Supper Club and an upstairs Concert Hall in the old Club Coconuts building, with a rooftop deck over the Cuyahoga. Tributes, brunches, dinner-and-a-show — Cleveland Magazine readers named it Best Live Music Venue in 2017 and 2018.
Round out the rotation with the bigger and the scrappier. The Agora on East 55th is the historic mid-size hall for national tours; House of Blues downtown on Euclid is the corporate room that still lands big names. On the DIY end, Happy Dog in Gordon Square pairs indie bands and polka with a hot-dog menu you build yourself, while Now That's Class on the West Side keeps the punk-and-metal flame lit. For jazz, Nighttown in Cleveland Heights remains the name people reach for. Lakewood's Winchester Music Tavern rounds out the western flank.
The through-line: none of this is a museum. Cleveland's real music history is being written weekly, in rooms that seat a few hundred and smell faintly of last night's show. Bring cash for the merch guy. He remembers.
