The Vindys Are Coming Home to a Ballroom
There is a particular kind of Ohio band that gets big enough to leave and stubborn enough to keep coming back. The Vindys — out of Youngstown, an hour southeast down the turnpike — are exactly that band, and on Saturday, Aug. 29, they headline the Beachland Ballroom. Mark it now; this one has homecoming energy written all over it.
If you've somehow missed them, the short version: the Vindys are a pop-rock outfit with jazz and orchestral bones, fronted by Jackie Popovec, a singer with the kind of belt that makes a 500-cap room feel small. The lineup is a small orchestra by indie standards — guitarists John Anthony and Rick Deak, keys, bass, drums, and, when the budget allows, the Youngstown Horns. They started in 2014 as a cover band working the Mahoning Valley bar circuit and turned that grind into something real.
The receipts are legitimate. Their song "Are You Ready" (2023) became a bona fide sports anthem, picked up by ESPN's ACC Network and folded into promos for the Pittsburgh Pirates and Penguins — the sort of placement that quietly pays the rent for years. They've recorded with the Canton Symphony Orchestra and the Youngstown Symphony, landed on the soundtrack of a 2024 horror film, and — the résumé line that actually moves the needle — opened Pat Benatar and Neil Giraldo's 2024–2025 North American tour. That's not a regional band anymore. That's a working national act that happens to be ours.
Which is what makes the Beachland date worth circling. There's a difference between a band that plays a city and a band that belongs to a region, and the Vindys read as the latter every time they cross back into Northeast Ohio. Youngstown and Cleveland don't always claim each other — the Valley has its own fierce identity — but a Beachland Ballroom crowd will treat this as a home game regardless. Expect a set that leans on the horn charts, Popovec working the room, and the specific roar a hometown-adjacent crowd saves for the band that made good.
It also says something healthy about the ecosystem. The Vindys are proof that you can build a career from the Ohio bar circuit outward without decamping to Nashville or Brooklyn the second a song lands on TV — that the on-ramps still work, that a 500-cap ballroom in Collinwood is a rung worth keeping on the ladder even after you've shared stages with arena headliners.
Three-plus weeks out is exactly the right time to buy. Beachland Ballroom shows with a regional pull tend to firm up fast, and "we'll grab tickets at the door" is how you end up on the sidewalk. Get them now, and give the Valley band the Cleveland welcome it's earned.
