Colby Acuff's "Enjoy the Ride": The Coeur d'Alene Kid Interviews America
Country music has spent a decade discovering places it forgot existed, and somewhere in that reshuffle a kid from Coeur d'Alene got to plant a flag. Colby Acuff — raised on the lake, weaned on George Strait and Clint Black, signed to Sony Music Nashville in 2023 — has spent three years insisting that the Idaho panhandle counts as country-music country. His latest record makes the case less by geography than by empathy.
Enjoy the Ride, released October 3, 2025, is a concept album with an unusually literal concept: Acuff interviewed more than 40 strangers across three cities and wrote an 11-song record out of what they told him. He has a hand in every track and wrote five of them alone; the guest list — Anderson East, Noah Gundersen among the collaborators — leans more toward songwriters' songwriters than radio ringers, which tells you where his head is. Critics noticed. Saving Country Music and Americana Highways both filed reviews the week it dropped, and the consensus was that Acuff aimed at the heartland and hit it center-mass.
The through-line, in his telling, is that everyone he interviewed wanted more or less the same things and simply disagreed on the route — a stubbornly generous thesis for 2025, and one that could have curdled into greeting-card mush in weaker hands. It mostly doesn't, because Acuff writes in specifics: the particular grief, the particular truck, the particular bar. That instinct traces straight back to his 2023 major-label debut, Western White Pines, which he built explicitly around the mountain-country landscape of home — a record he framed as "mountain country music," a subgenre he was more or less inventing a market for.
Why does this matter to a North Idaho reader flipping through a local music blog? Because Acuff is the rarest thing a regional scene can produce: a genuine national act who still says the town's name out loud. Plenty of artists leave, sand off the accent, and pretend they were always from Nashville. Acuff did the opposite — he turned Coeur d'Alene into a brand asset, and in doing so gave every open-mic kid at a Sherman Avenue bar proof that the drive to somewhere bigger can start from right here without erasing the here.
Enjoy the Ride is not a hometown record the way Western White Pines was — its map is national, its strangers are anonymous. But it is a hometown-values record, made by someone who learned to listen in a place where you cannot afford to write anybody off.
Put it on for the drive up 95. It was, in a real sense, written for exactly that stretch of road.
