Homegrown and Heavy: A Springs Showcase Takes Over Sunshine Studios Tonight
Tonight the touring circuit takes the night off and the locals take the stage — all five slots of it. Sunshine Studios Live hosts a stacked homegrown bill on Aug 5 featuring The Ex-Faces, Deep Within, Gravy, Stitch and Waylon: a one-night snapshot of what the Colorado Springs underground actually sounds like when nobody's routing through from out of state.
This is the show the algorithm will never recommend to you, and that's precisely the point. A five-band local bill is a scene taking its own temperature — a night where the crowd is half other musicians, the merch is hand-numbered, and the between-set conversation is really a booking meeting in disguise. The room has built two decades of goodwill on exactly this trade — give the heavy, weird, unsigned locals a real stage with a real PA and a real door split, and let the audience decide who's next. The venue's whole independent identity, the one it markets as "19 years strong," is downstream of nights like tonight.
Why it matters beyond the door count: local showcases are how a music town renews itself. Touring headliners are a market's present; the five-band Wednesday is its future. Every regional act that eventually sells you a ticket at Stargazers or the Ford was, not long ago, fourth on a bill like this, playing to a room that had to be convinced. Show up early enough and you get to say you were there when.
So skip the streaming queue tonight. Pay the modest cover, catch a band whose name you'll have to ask someone to spell, and buy the shirt. The Colorado Springs scene doesn't need your nostalgia for the shows that already happened. It needs your body in the room for the ones happening now.
Doors are early, the bill is long, and somewhere in those five sets is a band you'll brag about knowing in three years.
