Weekend Preview: The Biggest Music Weekend of the Springs Summer
Clear your calendar and pick your battles, because Aug 14–15 might be the single most overbooked weekend Colorado Springs has seen all summer. Every tier of the city's live-music economy is firing at once — clubs, theaters and the big amphitheater — on the same two nights.
Down in the clubs, the choices are cruel in the best way. The Black Sheep runs a two-night knockout: soul-rap crossover artist Jehry Robinson on Friday, Aug 14, then Nashville rock-and-rollers Goodbye June on Saturday, Aug 15. Over at the freshly downtown Lulu's Downtown, Grateful-Dead-through-a-laser-prism outfit Steely Dead lights up Friday before singer-songwriter Miles Nielsen takes Saturday.
The theaters bring the sentiment. Stargazers Theatre hosts a genuine milestone Friday as all-vocal rock band FACE celebrates its 25-year anniversary — a quarter-century of making a five-person mouth sound like a full band, in the domed room that helped build them. Saturday, Stargazers turns the stage over to Rafiel and The Room Shakers for a blues-rock-and-soul night doubling as a benefit for Care and Share, the regional food bank. Come for the groove, leave having fed somebody.
And then there's the arena tier, because of course there is. Up north, the Ford Amphitheater counters with a murderers' row: the Red Rocker himself, Sammy Hagar, on Thursday Aug 13; bluegrass royalty Alison Krauss (with Jerry Douglas) on Friday; and chart-topping worship-pop star Lauren Daigle on Saturday. That's a big-room bill that would headline most cities' entire summers — and here it's just the weekend's undercard for people who prefer a chair.
Why it matters: a weekend like this is the receipt. Four or five viable rooms, all selling tickets on the same nights, is the statistical signature of a real music market — not a stopover, a destination. A few summers ago this town would have had one show worth the drive on an August Saturday. Now the problem is choosing.
Our advice: pick a room, commit, and don't spend the night doom-scrolling the shows you're missing. They'll be back. In Colorado Springs, they always come back now — and that's the whole story of this summer in one sentence.
