You Can Smell the History: La Fiebre Is Cutting Album No. 16 on Leopard Street
There is a low brick building on Leopard Street where much of the Tejano canon was recorded, and this summer it is very much awake. La Fiebre — the four-decade Pasadena institution known as "The Pride of Pasadena" — has been back inside Freddie Records' Legends Sound Studios in Corpus Christi, cutting what will be the band's 16th studio album, according to reporting from Tejano Nation on June 4, 2026.
The context is the story. La Fiebre spent 2025 in turmoil — departing members, legal fights, even competing versions of the band — and came out the other side rebuilt around founders Rudy Rocha and Joe Angel Reynosa, with original horn player Rick Patino back and a marquee new frontman: Abel Talamantez, the Latin-GRAMMY-winning veteran of Menudo, MDO and Kumbia Kings, who debuted with the group in February 2026. Band manager Jim Luna told Tejano Nation the group had already tracked seven or eight songs.
For Talamantez, walking into Freddie Records was its own event. "It sort of feels like a museum. You can definitely smell the history when you see all those plaques all over those hallways," he told The Bo Corona Show on Aug. 7, 2026, calling it "the perfect environment" and promising "a hot album." He also teased a genuine relic: an unreleased Freddie Martinez Sr. composition, never heard before, expected to land on the new record.
One accuracy note, because it's the kind of thing that gets garbled: the big Freddie Records Artist Showcase where La Fiebre plans to unveil some of this — Aug. 14, alongside Gary Hobbs, Jay Perez and David Lee Garza — is happening at Texas Rodeo Saloon in Katy, not here. The record itself, though, is being made in Corpus.
And that's what matters. Freddie Records has been a Corpus Christi engine of Tejano music for generations, and the fact that a legacy act chose to rebuild its future inside these particular walls — rather than a Nashville or Austin room — is a statement about where this music's center of gravity still sits. Tejano's obituary gets written every few years; sessions like these keep proving it premature.
Album No. 16 doesn't have a release date yet. When it drops, remember it was born on Leopard Street.
