This Weekend: Gypsy Swing in a Barn, a Jazz Matinee, and a Whole County Playing Outside

Here's the good news about a Door County summer weekend: you cannot possibly do all of it, so stop trying and pick a lane. Here's the better news: almost every lane this weekend ends somewhere worth ending.

The marquee sit-down show is Sunday. The Fishstock Concert Series brings the Caravan Gypsy Swing Ensemble to the century-old Fishstock Concert Barn in Fish Creek at 7 pm on July 19 — Django-style hot-club jazz, all rhythm guitar and darting violin lines, which is exactly the kind of music a wooden barn was built to amplify. Fishstock's 2026 season opened July 5 with Will Krueger and runs Sunday nights through the summer; this is one of its livelier bills, and the room's split indoor-outdoor seating means you can chase or avoid the evening chill as you like.

If you'd rather take your jazz by daylight, Birch Creek runs a Big Band Jazz matinee on Saturday, July 18, out at the Dutton Concert Barn on County E — a chance to hear the faculty-and-student orchestra swing through the Ellington-Basie canon without committing your whole evening.

Then there's the free circuit, which this weekend is basically everywhere. Saturday afternoon means live music on the winery patios — von Stiehl in Algoma, Simon Creek and Parallel 44 in Carlsville and Sevastopol, Lautenbach's in Fish Creek — plus Door County Brewing Co.'s music hall in Baileys Harbor from mid-afternoon on. Come evening, Scotty's in Jacksonport and Dovetail in Sister Bay pick up the slack, and Husby's in Sister Bay runs late for anyone still standing. Note that Simon Creek is dark on July 18 this month, so don't build your afternoon around it.

Roll into the new week and the village series resume their steady drumbeat: Evenings in Ephraim on Monday, Sister Bay Concerts in the Park and Sturgeon Bay's Harmony by the Bay on Wednesday, Egg Harbor's Rhythm and Roots on Thursday. None of it costs a dime, all of it happens outdoors, and collectively it's the truest picture of what this county sounds like when nobody's charging admission.

The through-line worth noticing: on a single peninsula weekend you can hear hot-club swing in a barn, a big-band matinee, and a half-dozen solo acoustic sets on the water, and never repeat a genre or a room. That range — packed into forty miles of shoreline — is the whole argument for summering up here with your ears open.

One logistical truth the brochures won't tell you: the only real bottleneck is the road. Give yourself an extra twenty minutes between Fish Creek and Sister Bay on a Saturday, and never, ever assume you'll find parking in Ephraim after 6. Pack the folding chairs. Pack the sweatshirt. Go.
