This Weekend, Downtown Tyler Turns Into a Songwriters' Round
The biggest weekend of the East Texas summer is not a road-trip weekend. For once, everything worth doing is within walking distance of the Smith County courthouse — because the inaugural Brick Street Revival singer-songwriter festival takes over Liberty Hall on Friday, July 31 and Saturday, August 1.
Here is the bill, and it is a good one. Friday night pairs Wade Bowen — a Texas-music fixture since 2002, ten studio albums deep, honored as Texas Radio's Male Vocalist, Single, and Songwriter of the Year — with Sean McConnell, the Grammy-nominated writer whose songs have been cut by Tim McGraw, Brothers Osborne, Little Big Town, and half the CMA membership. Saturday night brings Aaron Raitiere, the Kentucky songwriter who won a Grammy in 2019 for co-writing "I'll Never Love Again" from "A Star Is Born," alongside Texas troubadour Jack Ingram. Four writers, two nights, the stories behind the songs — that is the whole format, and in a 1930s theater it should land. Two-day passes and single-night tickets are moving through Prekindle.
If the square is not your speed, the region gives you options. Out on S. Beckham, Stanley's Famous Pit Barbecue keeps its Friday-night yard series running through the summer — check the Prekindle calendar for who's on the bill this week. East in Nacogdoches, Banita Creek Hall does what it does best on a Saturday night: Red Dirt, a two-step floor, and cold longnecks in a proper Texas dancehall. And True Vine Brewing in Tyler remains the reliable low-key patio hang if you want live music without a ticket stub.
Why circle Brick Street specifically? Because a first-year festival is a promise a town is making to itself. Community leaders pitched this one explicitly as a downtown-revitalization play — music as the lever to pull people back onto the brick streets that gave it its name. A strong debut weekend does more than sell out Liberty Hall; it tells the next round of bookers that Tyler will turn out for a listening-room show, not just a barbecue blowout.
So park once, walk everywhere, and let four excellent writers talk you through their catalogs. If East Texas wants a marquee songwriter weekend of its own, it starts Friday.
