Down by the Cape Fear, the Tributes Play for a Cause

Some concert series chase novelty. Rock'n On The River chases a sunset over the Cape Fear, a lawn full of chairs, and a cover band that knows every note — and it has turned that formula into one of Fayetteville's most beloved warm-weather rituals.

The setup at Campbellton Landing, on the east bank of the river, is refreshingly no-nonsense. Admission is free. Parking is ten dollars. No outside coolers or containers — you buy food and drink on-site — and you bring your own chair, with gates opening around 5:30 and music running the evening on a two-band bill. It is a formula the series repeats installment after installment because it works, and because it does a little good on the side: a portion of beer proceeds benefits the Karen Chandler Trust, which supports cancer patients in the community.

The lineups lean, proudly, into tribute. The 2026 rotation has featured Heart Breaker (a Heart-meets-Led-Zeppelin act), ZZ Top Notch, the variety outfit Krossroadz, and Southern-rockers Harley & Big Country — the kind of billing that turns a riverbank into a singalong. The season's remaining summer installments land on the schedule, with a fall closer reported for Sept. 19 pairing Heart Breaker with Fear State.

What makes this series worth a full write-up isn't the setlists — you know the setlists. It's the place. Fayetteville is a river town that spends most of its life with its back to the water; Rock'n On The River spins the whole town around to face the Cape Fear for an evening, plants a few thousand chairs in the grass, and lets the light do half the work. Add a charitable angle and a beer, and you have something closer to a community reunion than a concert.

There's a lesson in it for anyone trying to build an audience here. You don't always need the new thing. Sometimes you need the reliable thing, in a beautiful spot, that gives a little back — and you need to do it every summer until the town treats it like weather.

Ten bucks to park. Bring a chair. Face the river. The Cape Fear has been waiting all year for you to notice it.
