'Night Flight' and the Little Key West Label That Keeps Betting on the Keys

Most of the music that defines the Florida Keys evaporates the second the last chord dies over the water — cover sets, one-nighters, songs you'll never hear the same way twice. Which is exactly why a record label headquartered at Mile Zero matters, and why Gary Hempsey's Night Flight is worth pulling off the shelf this summer.

Hempsey, a folk-and-Americana songwriter with deep Marathon and Florida Keys ties, released Night Flight as an original full-length LP through Conch Town Records, the independent Key West label with an outpost in London and a stubborn commitment to signing island talent. The album drew notice beyond the Overseas Highway — UK outlet Fame Magazine profiled it as a "soulful" turn — which is not nothing for a record made by a guy you might otherwise catch on a Keys happy-hour stage.

The label context is the real story. Conch Town Records was founded by locals to do the unglamorous work almost nobody in a bar town does — signing, recording, distributing and promoting Keys musicians so their songs survive past last call. Its roster is a snapshot of the scene's range: bluesman Bill Blue and his album The Other Side of Paradise; Molly Hatchet alum Parker Lee and Devil's in Dixie; the punk-tinged Tony Baltimore; and Hempsey himself, whose catalog runs Training Wheels and Night Flight. In March 2025 the label added Motown veteran multi-instrumentalist Larin Michaels, a signing that says a lot about its ambitions.

Why does a two-year-old Americana record deserve an album feature in a live-music blog? Because in the Keys, recording is an act of preservation, almost defiance. A town that boasts its own record label — a fact Keys Weekly rightly flagged when the inaugural Iggy awards sold out the Key West Theater — is a town treating its musicians as artists with catalogs, not just entertainers with tip jars. Night Flight is what that looks like in practice: a set of songs that outlives the gig.
