A Field Guide to Fort Collins's Live-Music Rooms
Every town that loves music tells you so by where it puts its stages. Fort Collins puts them in a 1903 sandstone hall, in a canyon carved by a trout stream, on the patio of a beer temple, and in the back of a bar that has changed its name more times than a witness in hiding. Here is your standing-order guide to the rooms that matter — pin it to the fridge, argue with it at the bar.
Washington's (132 Laporte Ave) is the big room downtown, roughly 900 capacity inside a 1903 sandstone building, all wide-open dance floor and balcony sightlines wrapped around what regulars will tell you is a genuinely world-class sound system. When a touring act wants Fort Collins to feel like a real market, this is where they land.
The Aggie Theatre (204 S College Ave) is the scrappier sibling — about 650 people packed into a century-old former movie house that has hosted, in Westword's phrase, everything "from rap to raves, from indie rock to comedy shows, from jam bands to cowpunk." It is a dive, it is beloved, and it is proudly both.
Magic Rat Live Music (111 Chestnut St), tucked into the Elizabeth Hotel, is the room that wears its heart on its wall: a keyboard signed by the entire E Street Band, mounted beneath the lyrics to "Jungleland." The name is a Springsteen pull, obviously. The bookings lean singer-songwriter and jazz-forward.
The Lyric (1209 N College Ave) is the polymath — indie cinema, art gallery, bar and venue with four different performance areas, including an outdoor Screen Stage where owner Ben Mozer's team runs some of the most eclectic programming in NoCo. Come for a movie, stay for a band you've never heard of.
Up the Poudre Canyon sits the crown jewel. Mishawaka Amphitheatre (13714 Poudre Canyon Hwy, Bellvue) bills itself as "Northern Colorado's Musical Playground," a riverside stage with a full-service restaurant where the Cache la Poudre practically supplies the low end. Shuttles run from town; the drive up is half the show. It anchors the whole summer — Grace Potter opened the season here tonight.
Out in Laporte, Swing Station (3311 CR 54G) keeps the honky-tonk flame lit — a hopping indoor dance floor, a cool outdoor patio, and a two-step crowd that does not care what year it is.
Then there are the beer stages. New Belgium runs its free Friday lawn series (roughly 5–7 p.m., blankets and dogs welcome), and Odell hosts Wednesday and Sunday sets on its tree-shaded patio, food trucks in tow. In the heart of downtown, Old Town Square hosts Bohemian Nights' free Thursday Night Live every Thursday evening through the summer — the closest thing this city has to a communal front porch.
History deserves a paragraph. The room at 167 N College has been Mountain Tap, then The Starlight (String Cheese Incident played there in March 1997), then the long-running Hodi's Half Note, before it turned comedy club around 2020 — a ~250–350-cap workhorse that trained a generation of local bookers. And at 254 Linden, the bar that was the Artery, then East Coast Bar, then The Coast, reopened in fall 2025 as Sound Bar — same corner, new chapter, still the DIY room where a Fort Collins band plays its first real gig.
Round it out with Avogadro's Number ("Avo's"), the folk-leaning listening room that has hosted acoustic sets for decades, and you have the map. The venues change names; the scene doesn't blink. Learn these rooms and you'll never have a boring Thursday again.
