Johnny Holm Is Coming to Town Square, and the Whole Block Knows the Words
Some acts you review. The Johnny Holm Band you simply account for, the way you account for the weather. This week the Minnesota party-rock institution rolls back into downtown Grand Forks for its regular takeover of Town Square, and if you've lived in this corner of the Red River Valley for more than a summer, you already have a memory of it.
The date is where I have to slow down and be honest with you. The venue's own event listing has the show on Thursday, July 30, gates at 7 p.m., music 8 to 11 p.m., $25 cash at the gate. A separate roundup floated July 19 at $20. Those can't both be right, and I'd trust the venue page — but confirm before you drive down.
What's not in doubt is the shape of the night. This is an all-ages, ID-scanned, wristband-for-21-plus affair at DeMers Avenue and 3rd Street, no outside beverages, no backpacks, Brick & Barley pouring on site, bring your own portable chair. It is engineered as a downtown block party, and Holm — who has been running this playbook across the Upper Midwest for decades — is one of the last bandleaders who can still turn a parking-lot-adjacent public square into a singalong of a few thousand people without a single song anyone would call new.
That's the appeal and, if you're a certain kind of listener, the friction. Holm's set is a jukebox: classic rock, oldies, crowd bait, delivered with a showman's timing and zero pretension. You will not discover anything. You will, however, watch three generations of the same Grand Forks families sing the same choruses at each other, which is its own kind of discovery about a place.
And that's why it belongs on this blog next to the museum lawn and the arena. A live-music ecosystem needs a top and a bottom and a big warm middle, and the middle is exactly this — the free-ish, no-cover-charge-to-your-dignity communal night that gets people who'd never buy a club ticket comfortable standing in a crowd while a band plays loud. Town Square's summer programming, Holm included, is the on-ramp. Some of those singalong kids graduate to the Empire's original-music nights. Most don't. The scene needs both.
Go for the spectacle, stay for the sociology, and keep cash in your pocket — the gate doesn't take cards. Just nail down which Thursday it is first.
