The Oldest Bar in Arkansas Still Books Four Nights a Week — Here's Why That's Not Nostalgia

Walk into The Ohio Club on a Thursday night and the first thing you notice is that the room refuses to be a museum. Yes, the mahogany back bar dates to the town's gambling heyday; yes, the walls trade on Al Capone and Babe Ruth stories; yes, it advertises itself as the oldest bar in Arkansas, open on Central Avenue since 1905. Timberwood and the Oaklawn Event Center land the big names, but the Ohio Club is where a local guitarist gets a standing weekend gig, where a touring act passing through can grab a Thursday, where a visitor who wandered off Bathhouse Row discovers the town has a pulse after dark. Rooms like this are the ones that vanish first when a downtown gets "revitalized" into boutiques, and they are the hardest to replace. Hot Springs still has one that has never stopped.

If you go, tip the band, respect the history, and don't order anything blended. This is a place that has been getting people through long afternoons and longer nights for well over a century. Let it do its job.
