This Weekend: Fair Legends, Fresh Punk, And A Weezer Séance
Mid-August in Indianapolis means one thing above all others: the Indiana State Fair is in full swing, and the Free Stage is loaded. But the fairgrounds are only part of the weekend. From classic-rock warhorses to a basement's worth of new punk to an album played reverently start-to-finish, here's your August 14–16 rundown.
Indiana State Fair Free Stage. The Fair runs August 7 through 23, and this weekend brings two very different bookends of Americana. Grand Funk Railroad plays Thursday, August 14 — yes, "We're an American Band," and yes, they will play it, and yes, you will yell along. Then Saturday, August 16, country heavyweight Trace Adkins brings the baritone. "Free Stage" means the music is included with fair admission, which makes both nights the best value in the city this weekend by a comfortable margin. Come for the concert, leave with a corn dog and a sunburn.
Melody Inn (3826 N Illinois St). The Mel does what the Mel does. Thursday, August 14, it's Skins / Pilots / Uno Gold — a proper local bill in a proper small room. Then Saturday, August 15, the institution rolls on with its weekly Punk Rock Night, the standing Saturday tradition that has kept this dive loud for years. Wear the boots.
HI-FI (1043 Virginia Ave, Fountain Square). Two nights, two moods. Thursday, August 14, Preston Cooper headlines with Chris Craney & The Rust Belt in support — a night for the roots-and-songwriter crowd. Then Friday, August 15, the room flips entirely for Kompany, with MTB, BRAPP and Tvvostep — bass music built to rattle that narrow club to its studs. Same stage, wildly different Fridays depending on which one you catch.
Square Cat Vinyl (1054 Virginia Ave, Fountain Square). Friday, August 15, the record store hosts a Weezer listening party — the platonic ideal of a Square Cat night. Gather in a room, let the record play, nod knowingly at the good parts and argue about the discography afterward. Part séance, part support group, all vinyl.
Blade Rave at The Deluxe (Old National Centre, 502 N New Jersey St). Also Friday, August 15, The Deluxe hosts Blade Rave — the big-room dance option of the weekend for anyone who wants their Friday night with more lasers and fewer folding chairs.
So here's how the weekend shakes out. Thursday is a genuine fork in the road: fairgrounds nostalgia with Grand Funk, a local punk bill at the Mel, or a songwriter's night at HI-FI. Friday tilts hard toward dancing — Kompany's bass at HI-FI, Blade Rave's lasers at The Deluxe — with the Weezer faithful convening at Square Cat for something gentler. Saturday closes it out with Trace Adkins on the Free Stage and, as ever, Punk Rock Night holding down the Mel.
