Tonight, Friday, Aug 14, the Summer of the Arts Friday Night Concert Series brings the River Glen Band to the downtown Iowa City Ped Mall stage (6:30 p.m., free). Same drill as all season: grab a spot on the bricks, feed the taco trucks, and if the sky misbehaves the show slides over to the Chauncey Swan ramp with a call posted by 4 p.m. It's one of the last handful of Friday sets before the series winds toward its September close, and there's a valedictory quality to these late-summer nights — the light lasts longer, the crowd lingers, and everyone knows the free-grass Fridays are numbered until spring.
If you want to make a full weekend of it, the real event lands Sunday, Aug 16, when funk juggernaut Lettuce headlines the Englert Theatre (7:30 p.m.). This is the paid, dressed-up, occasion end of the Corridor's spectrum, and it's the ideal counterweight to Friday's free set — the same city, the same weekend, two totally different ways to hear live music. Lettuce has spent 30 years turning theaters into sweat lodges with the sheer physics of its horn section, and a seated historic room like the Englert is exactly where that band's precision-versus-chaos dynamic hits hardest. Do not expect to stay in your seat. Nobody does.
The contrast is the story. Friday is civic, casual, and free — the scene at its most democratic, a band earning a downtown crowd that wandered over on a whim.
