Two Nights of Arena Country — and a Sweaty Club Groove to Balance It Out (Jul 24–26)
Some weekends the biggest star in America parks in your city for two straight nights. This is one of them. But the smart move this weekend isn't only the arena — it's knowing when to go big and when to go small, because Jacksonville is offering both at once.
The headline, literally, is Cody Johnson, who plants a two-night flag at VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena on Friday and Saturday, Jul 24 and 25, both at 7:30 p.m. CoJo is, by any honest measure, the biggest touring act in country music right now — a former rodeo cowboy who bypassed the Nashville machine and built an arena career on sheer force of will and a voice that doesn't need Auto-Tune's help. On Saturday, Jul 25, while the arena roars, Jack Rabbits in San Marco hosts a funk-and-roots double bill: Scotland's High Fade with DeeOhGee. High Fade are the Edinburgh funk-punk crew that blew up busking on Scottish streets and are now running their "Twice As Nice" North American tour; DeeOhGee are a trio — Dylan Whitlow, Zack Murphy, and Matthew Paige — trafficking in rowdy, no-backing-tracks rock 'n' roll with bluesy and cosmic-country edges. A hundred-cap room, a Scottish groove machine, and a sweat-soaked American roots band: that's a better hang than the price of admission suggests.
The weekend's shoulders are worth marking too. On Thursday, Jul 23, reggae-rock road dog Mike Pinto warms up Jack Rabbits before the crowds arrive — laid-back, sun-baked, exactly the Thursday you want in a Jacksonville July. And on Sunday, Jul 26, The Albatross closes the weekend with Austin Meade, the Texas alt-country-meets-hard-rock songwriter who's carved out a lane loud enough for the pit and twangy enough for the porch.
Why frame it this way — the arena and the club side by side? Because a healthy music town needs both, and Jacksonville, this weekend, is flexing exactly that. The VyStar stand is the proof that Duval can pull country's top draw for not one but two sold-leaning nights, a genuine flex for a market that too often gets skipped for Tampa or Atlanta. But the Jack Rabbits bill is the proof that matters more over the long haul: that a tiny San Marco black box can pull a buzzing Scottish import and a hungry touring trio on the same night the arena is the center of the universe.
