Your Weekend, Aug 14–16: Smooth Jazz Downtown, Raspberry Pie in San Marco, and a Very Big Purple Detour
Deep August in Jacksonville is when the calendar either dies of heatstroke or, occasionally, overachieves. This weekend, blessedly, it overachieves — with a national jazz bill on the river, a hometown headliner in San Marco, a finger-picking storyteller in Murray Hill, and, technically the night before it all kicks off, the loudest all-ages show in town. Here's how to spend it.
Thursday: The Wiggles bring the chaos to the Florida Theatre. Before the grown-up weekend begins, the Australian children's-entertainment juggernaut rolls into 128 E Forsyth St on Aug. 13 with "The Wiggles: Tree of Wisdom Spectacular!", part of the group's expanded North American summer tour. If you have a small human in your life, you already know this is the biggest ticket of the weekend in their world. Skivvy dancing at the Florida Theatre is not a phrase we expected to type, but here we are, and honestly the room can handle it — it's survived Elvis.
Friday & Saturday: First Coast Smooth Jazz Festival on the river. The weekend's marquee event is the two-day First Coast Smooth Jazz Festival, Aug. 14–15 at the DoubleTree by Hilton Jacksonville Riverfront. Saxophonist and flutist Marcus Anderson hosts a genuinely national bill — trumpeter-vocalist Ilya Serov, guitarist-vocalist Andréa Lisa, and vocalist Rebecca Jade among them, with multi-instrumentalist Nathan Mitchell listed as a Friday headliner. It's presented by the youth-focused nonprofit BirdWild and structured more like an upscale weekend experience than a lawn-chair festival, with day parties, a harbor hop, and dinner service woven through the music. Fair warning: it's priced accordingly — general admission runs $299, with VIP and table packages climbing well beyond that. (Our full festival preview runs tomorrow.)
Friday: Raspberry Pie headline Jack Rabbits. If your idea of a good Friday is closer to the ground and cheaper by a few hundred dollars, local favorites Raspberry Pie top the bill at Jack Rabbits, 1528 Hendricks Ave, on Aug. 14. It's exactly the kind of hometown show the San Marco club has built its 27-year reputation on: original music, a small room, and a band playing to the neighborhood that made them. Get there early and stand up front — that's the entire experience.
Saturday: Lexi Long at Mudville, Murray Hill. For the songwriter-listening-room crowd, Space Coast indie-folk artist Lexi Long plays the Mudville Listening Room on Aug. 15. Long tours behind her debut album, Sunswept, trading in darkly funny lyrics and virtuosic finger-picking on nylon guitar and banjo — a sound one write-up pegged as vintage-1970s with a modern edge. Mudville's whole thing is quiet, attentive rooms where you actually hear the words, which is precisely the setting this material wants.
Why it matters: this is the range that makes a real music city. In one weekend you can drop serious money on national smooth-jazz talent downtown, catch a homegrown band for the price of a couple beers in San Marco, and sit in reverent silence for a touring songwriter in Murray Hill — all inside Jacksonville proper, no 40-minute drive south required. (St. Augustine's amphitheater is lovely; it can wait.)
Pick your lane, or greedily run all four. August rarely offers this much. Duval, don't waste it.
