Blue Nagoon: Mike Maas Finally Takes the Bedroom Project to a Stage

For years, Blue Nagoon was a studio animal — the recording project of Juneau musician Mike Maas, existing mostly as albums ("Here Be Dragons," "Love in the Time Of…" and a rock record in progress) rather than as a band you could stand in front of. That changed this spring. On March 14, 2026, Blue Nagoon played its live debut at the Crystal Saloon, and the lineup Maas assembled tells you what he was waiting for: a real ensemble.

On paper it's a small orchestra by Juneau standards — Maas on keys and guitar, Nick Fishman on drums, Simon Taylor on bass, and a five-voice choir of local singers: Alyssa Fischer, Patricia Lattime, Shona Osterhout, Salissa Thole, and Allison Waid. The debut set mixed Maas originals with covers spanning the '80s to today, which is a savvy way to introduce a catalog nobody has heard live: give them a hook they know, then slip an original in behind it while they're smiling.

Why does a recording project going live matter enough to feature? Because it's the exact move a landlocked scene needs more of. Juneau is thick with people who make music privately — the town's isolation practically manufactures home-recordists — but a track on Bandcamp doesn't hold a room together on a Friday, and it doesn't put five of your neighbors on a stage getting paid to sing. Maas taking Blue Nagoon from headphones to the Crystal is a small act of scene-building: seven or eight musicians working who weren't working that gig before.

It also shows off the Crystal Saloon's evolving role. Five years ago the room bookers reached for a "live debut" would've defaulted to the Alaskan. That the Crystal is now where a project chooses to be born says the downtown ecosystem has real depth — two anchor rooms, not one, trading acts back and forth.
