Some weekends the calendar makes you choose. This is one of them. August 14 through 16, four Kansas City rooms are running strong bills at the same time, and there is genuinely no wrong answer — only trade-offs. Let's sort them out.
The Truman
Thursday's warm-up matters first: Willow Avalon plays The Truman on August 13, so if you're the type who takes the whole weekend early, start there.
Then the room shifts gears fast. Friday, August 14, The Truman hosts Hulvey on his "Could Be Tonight" Tour, with Indie Tribe and Kijan Boone along for the night. Saturday, August 15, it's the marquee draw of the whole weekend: Courtney Barnett brings her Creature of Habit Tour to town, with the fearless improviser Zoh Amba opening. Barnett's deadpan, hyper-observed songwriting has made her one of the most quietly essential guitarists working, and Amba's free-jazz saxophone is an inspired, only-in-a-good-scene pairing. This is the ticket to protect.
Knuckleheads Saloon
Out in the East Bottoms, the roadhouse is stacked all weekend. Friday, August 14, is a blues clinic: Mike Zito, the Guy Forsyth Band, and Brandon Miller sharing the night. Saturday, August 15, brings Southern-rock lifers Drivin' N' Cryin' with Nik Parr & The Selfless Lovers. And Sunday, August 16, Micky & the Motorcars close things out with their Texas-red-dirt swing. Remember: the trains still run past the outdoor stage, so the rhythm section gets occasional freight-line reinforcement.

The Crossroads goes from dreamy to demolition in a single day. Saturday, August 15, Holy Wave and Nightosphere bring the reverb-soaked, hypnotic end of the spectrum. Then August 16 flips the switch entirely: NONPOINT, SPINESHANK, (HED)P.E., and Macemouth turn recordBar into a nu-metal time machine. The Rino
Up in Northtown, the small club punches its weight. Friday, August 14, is a Haikus For Emus album-release party — always the best night to catch a local band, when they've got something to prove and something to celebrate. Saturday, August 15, The Rino goes heavy with Frozen Soul, whose bulldozing death metal is not for the faint of eardrum. Bring protection.
