Acadian Day Weekend: Rock 'n' Bowl, a Blue Moon Two-Step, and Shrimp on the Side

Here it is — the fullest music weekend of our little summer archive, stacked around Acadian Day (Saturday, August 15), the day Acadiana officially toasts its own stubborn survival. Clear your Friday and Saturday; the calendar's not leaving you much choice.

Kick off Friday, August 14, at Rock 'n' Bowl de Lafayette, where The Vermillionaires take the bandstand. The room is the platonic Lafayette night out — a set of bowling lanes and a live stage under one roof — and a homegrown band with a name lifted straight off Bayou Vermilion is exactly the right soundtrack for it. Bowl a frame, dance a set, repeat until closing.

Then Saturday goes fully Acadian. The anchor is the Blue Moon Saloon, where Les Amis du Teche and Dustin Dale Gaspard split a 9 p.m. bill built expressly for the holiday — traditional fiddle waltzes and two-steps on one side, Cajun-rooted modern folk on the other. It's the single best-programmed night of the weekend, and on the Blue Moon porch the line between the two styles dissolves about as fast as the line between band and audience.

Prefer your Cajun undiluted? Point the car to the Hideaway on Lee, where accordionist Kyle Huval & the Dixie Club Ramblers run the pure dance-hall tradition at 8 p.m. accordion, triangle, and a floor full of people who've been two-stepping since before they could drive. Between the Hideaway and the Blue Moon you can build a genuinely complete Acadian Day: the old style and the new-old style, a short drive apart.

And if you'd rather make a road trip of it, the whole thing is happening against the backdrop of the Delcambre Shrimp Festival (August 12–16), twenty-five minutes south, where the Cajun-zydeco-swamp-pop bandstand runs all weekend beside the boiled-shrimp tents. It is entirely possible — recommended, even — to eat Gulf shrimp on the Delcambre grounds Saturday afternoon and still make the Blue Moon porch by nine.

A programming note for the calendar-watchers: this is the back edge of our pilot window, and the timing is no accident. Acadiana front-loads its cultural firepower onto dates that mean something, and August 15 means a great deal down here. The free downtown series won't stir back to life until fall, but the barrooms and the shrimp-town grounds have the season more than covered.

So: Rock 'n' Bowl Friday, a two-step at the Blue Moon Saturday night, shrimp and a dance floor down in Delcambre in between. Wear the good boots. Bonne fête, Acadiana.
