This Weekend: A Pirate Invasion, Dante in Projection, and a Saturday at the Blue Moon

Independence week hangover behind us, Lafayette gets back to the business it does best — cramming three incompatible good times into a single Saturday and daring you to choose. This weekend, Saturday, July 11, is a genuine pileup.

Start with the loudest. The Acadiana Pirate Festival takes over 422 Refinery St. from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. (all ages), then flips to 18-and-up for the after-dark hours. It's a costumed, cannons-and-cutlasses affair with vendors and a stage, the kind of gloriously unserious themed party this town throws better than anyone. Come for the eyepatches; stay because someone will inevitably be playing something worth dancing to.

If your tastes run stranger and more rarefied, the Acadiana Center for the Arts downtown hosts the debut of Holy Animals, a two-night performance run July 11–12 built by Paige Barnett Kulbeth. The pitch: larger-than-life projections, live music, and a blend of modern and classical dance that reimagines Dante's Divine Comedy from the perspective of its female characters. This is the ambitious, grant-funded end of the Acadiana arts economy — the stuff that proves the AcA is more than a rental hall — and exactly the sort of swing you should reward with a ticket.

And then, because it is Saturday and this is Lafayette, there is the Blue Moon Saloon, where Crush Diamond headlines the back porch. You already know the drill on Convent Street: the guesthouse guests wander down, the porch fills, and the difference between "audience" and "dancers" dissolves by the second song. The Blue Moon is the surest bet in the city for a stranger to end the night having learned a two-step from someone they'll never see again.

That's the beauty of a Lafayette weekend — the choice is never whether to go out, only how many rooms you can hit before last call. A civically responsible plan: pirates by afternoon, Dante at dusk, Blue Moon by midnight. Wear comfortable shoes; you'll need all three.

A note for planners looking further down the calendar. The city's marquee free series are largely off the summer clock right now — Downtown Alive! runs its Parc Sans Souci bills in spring and fall, not the dead heat of July — which throws the season's weight onto the barrooms and the festival circuit. Good. The barrooms are where the culture actually lives, and the festival circuit is about to get busy: the Delcambre Shrimp Festival and a full slate of Acadian Day music are stacking up for mid-August.
