This Weekend: Santana Garcia on the Mesilla Plaza, Then a Sunday in the Park

The weekend forecast is hot and the weekend lineup is free, which is the correct ratio for a Las Cruces July. Two of the summer's best-standing traditions land back-to-back, and you can do both without spending more than gas money and a bar tab.

Start Friday, July 10, on the Mesilla Plaza, where the Summer Music Series hosts Santana Garcia from 8 to 10 p.m. The town of Mesilla runs these Friday shows free on the plaza, under the shadow of the Basilica of San Albino, and the setting does half the work — 150-year-old adobe, cottonwoods, the kind of dusk light people drive across the state for. Garcia opens a July run that continues with Sax Attitude (July 17), Lush Life Jazz (July 24) and the Rockabilly Strangers, billed as the season finale, on July 31.

Then reset Sunday, July 12, for the season's second Music in the Park at Young Park, 7 p.m., free. This week pairs Geniee & The Starliners, an oldies outfit, with Tequila Nights working the oldies-country-rock lane. The city stages two bands a Sunday all summer, and the crowd is the whole point: multigenerational, lawn-chaired, some there for the music and some there because it's the coolest patch of grass in town after dark.

What ties these two nights together is that neither one is a concert in the transactional sense. Nobody's paying $80 and a service fee. These are civic music — programmed by a town government and a parks department, funded to keep public space full and local bands working through the slow months. In a lot of cities that model has quietly withered. Here it's thriving, and on a Friday-into-Sunday like this one you can feel why: the plaza and the park are doing what venues used to do, which is give a scene somewhere to gather when the touring circuit forgets you exist.

Practical notes: both are outdoor and desert-hot until well past sundown, so water and a chair beat looking cool. Mesilla's restaurants and bars ring the plaza if you want dinner with your Friday set. Young Park has room to spread out; get there before 7 for the good grass.

Two nights, zero cover, one very good weekend. Go be a crowd.
