Anthony Bourdain's Favorite Dive Is Still the Loudest Room on Anaheim Street

Every city has a bar that outsiders "discover" and locals have simply always known. In Long Beach that's Alex's Bar, the punk-and-horror-movie fever dream at 2913 E. Anaheim St. in Zaferia, and it spends this month doing what it does best: booking shows that no committee would ever greenlight.

First, the legend, because you'll hear it anyway: Alex's Bar is widely counted among Anthony Bourdain's favorite bars in America, a genuine badge in a town not short on dive credibility. But the reputation isn't nostalgia — it's earned nightly by a booking policy that treats "genre" as a suggestion. Garage, hardcore, psych, surf, costumed art-punk, and the occasional gloriously unclassifiable theme night all pass through the same low-lit room with the photo booth in the corner and the patio out back.

The August calendar is a perfect core sample. The listed slate runs the horror-punk absurdists Radioactive Chicken Heads, a Chevy Metal night on Aug. 15, and More Ephemerol on Aug. 16 — and, in a very Alex's touch, an all-ages-friendly Sunday matinee on Aug. 16 with Daniel Grimsland and Harry Katz and the Pistachios playing in the early afternoon before the night show takes over. A punk matinee and a late-night freakout in the same room on the same Sunday is the whole ethos in one day.

Why it matters: rooms like this are the actual farm system of a music town. The amphitheater down by the water gets the headlines and the reggae-rock double bills, but the bands that fill big rooms in ten years are, right now, playing to 100 sweaty people on Anaheim Street for a cut of the door. Long Beach has always had an outsize punk and DIY lineage — from the South Bay hardcore pipeline to the ska-punk that fed Warped Tour — and Alex's is one of the few remaining rooms that has kept booking it through every wave of rent hikes and closures. When The Prospector went dark after nearly 60 years, rooms like this got more essential, not less.

The vibe is not for everyone, which is the point. It's dark, it's loud, the decor leans grindhouse, and the crowd would rather you knew the band than knew somebody. That's a feature.

Go on a night when you've never heard of anyone playing. That's the whole trick with Alex's: the bar has better taste than you do, and it's been proving it on Anaheim Street for decades. Trust the room.
