Viva Big Bend at 15: One Weekend, Six Towns, 65 Shows, and a Lot of Sunscreen

For 51 weeks a year, Far West Texas is a place where live music takes some planning. For the other week, it comes to you — in a dozen rooms across six towns, all at once, in the hottest stretch of the year, and somehow it works.

Viva Big Bend returns for its 15th annual run July 22–26, 2026, and the numbers still don't quite compute for a region this empty: more than 65 performances and roughly 44 acts spread across Alpine, Marfa, Marathon, Fort Davis, Terlingua, and Presidio. Alpine, as the largest hub, carries the bulk of the stages — the Granada Theatre, Railroad Blues, the Holland Hotel and Murphy Street, the Ritchey, the Museum of the Big Bend, and more. Marfa's action centers on Planet Marfa and the Pool at Hotel Saint George; Marathon runs through the Gage Hotel and Desert Ghost Distilling; Fort Davis and Terlingua fill out the map.

The bill leans, as it always has, into the festival's real identity: a Texas-music family reunion with a strong regional and Tejano backbone rather than a national-headliner arms race. Austin blues guitarist and singer Jackie Venson is featured in the festival's own promotion; longtime Viva draws Patrice Pike and Bob Schneider return, alongside deep-bench favorites like fiddling humorist Doug Moreland, the string-band circus of the Doodlin' Hogwallops, and the Selena tribute powerhouse Bidi Bidi Banda. It's a lineup that rewards the person who wanders into a stage cold, not the one hunting a single name.

Logistically, it's a wristband festival, and the pickup schedule is its own small choreography: box office at Alpine's Holland Hotel opens Wednesday, July 22, from 3 to 7 p.m., with additional windows through the weekend and satellite pickup at Planet Marfa in Marfa on Thursday and Friday nights. Between-town driving is unavoidable and part of the deal — plan sets by geography, not just by clock, and never assume you can catch an 8 p.m. in Alpine and a 9 p.m. in Marfa.

Here's why Viva matters beyond the weekend it occupies. A festival like this is the load-bearing beam of an entire regional scene's year. It's the reason touring acts route through a corner of Texas they'd otherwise skip, the reason the little rooms can afford a marquee night, the reason a 19-year-old at Sul Ross gets to see 40 bands without leaving the county. Kill it, and the desert gets a lot quieter. Fifteen years in, that it still exists — and still books the Tejano band and the porch fiddler and the touring blues guitarist on the same weekend — is the healthiest sign this scene throws off all year.

Bring water. Bring cash for the box office. Bring a designated driver for those long dark highways between towns.
