A Field Guide to Missoula's Live-Music Rooms
You can spend a summer in this town going to shows every night of the week and never leave a two-mile radius of the Clark Fork. Missoula is small enough that the same bartender pours your beer at three different venues and big enough that a national act on a river bank can sell 4,000 tickets on a Tuesday. Here's the lay of the land — where to stand, what to know, and why each room earns its spot on the marquee.
KettleHouse Amphitheater (Bonner). The big swing. Logjam Presents' outdoor room sits "nestled on the banks of the Blackfoot River outside Missoula," holds 4,250, and shares a fence line with KettleHouse Brewery. It is the only place in the state where you can watch the sun drop behind a ridge, hear a headliner, and hear the river underneath the headliner. Bring a layer; canyon nights turn.
The Wilma (131 S. Higgins Ave). The grand dame — a 1920s theater on the river, historically restored to 1,500 seats, that Logjam bills, not unreasonably, as "the heartbeat of the town." Balcony rail is the best real estate in Missoula for a sold-out show. When the chandelier light hits an old proscenium, cheap tickets feel like a steal.
The Top Hat (134 W. Front St). The everyday workhorse. Five hundred and fifty capacity, downtown, on-site kitchen doing house-made plates from local ingredients, and — after 2013 and 2016 renovations — what the venue accurately calls "a gritty club vibe with all the modern services of a new venue." Half the calendar is free. This is where you catch a band before they graduate to the Wilma.
Caras Park. Not a club — a riverside pavilion — but on summer Thursdays it becomes the biggest free show in town. More on that below.
Draught Works Brewery. Taproom stage, dog-friendly patio, no cover, working-band energy.
The Roxy Theater. A nonprofit cinema on the Hip Strip that moonlights as a music and film-festival house.
The Union Club, Monk's Bar, and the Badlander/Palace complex. The late-night triangle. The Union Club is a historic downtown bar with a stage; Monk's leans loud and local; the Badlander/Palace complex on Ryman is where DJ nights and touring punk land after midnight.
Free Cycles / DIY spaces. The all-ages, community-run underbelly — bike-shop-turned-gathering-space energy, where the door money is honest and the amps are borrowed.
The ZACC (Zootown Arts Community Center). The Show Room here is the incubator — all-ages, artist-first, the room where a lot of the bands on this page played their first gig.
A few house rules. Logjam runs KettleHouse, the Wilma, and the Top Hat, so one account buys you the whole summer. Downtown parking gets thin by 7; walk or bike. And when a Missoula crowd goes quiet for a ballad, it actually goes quiet — this is a listening town wearing a party town's clothes.
Now go stand somewhere with a view of the water. Most of the good ones have one.
