"Beautiful: The Carole King Musical" runs August 12–16 at the Alabama Shakespeare Festival out in Blount Cultural Park, and the closing performance is a Sunday matinee on August 16 at 2 p.m. If you don't know the show: it's the jukebox musical built around King's life and catalog — the Brill Building years, the songs she wrote for everyone else before she stepped out front, and eventually "Tapestry," one of the most beloved records in American pop. ASF has been leaning into jukebox musicals, and this is exactly the kind of thing that room does well: real singers, live band, a catalog so deep you'll be startled how many songs you already know by heart. The key detail is that closing matinee. Sunday, 2 p.m., and then it's gone. A 2 p.m. curtain is also, frankly, the civilized way to do a musical — home in time for dinner, no midnight parking-lot shuffle.
Then, for the daylight hours of that same weekend, aim your car at 1 Museum Drive. The Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts hosts the Montgomery Premier Music and Craft Festival on August 15–16, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days, and — say it with me — it's free. The festival advertises live music alongside the craft vendors, so the safe promise is this: there will be music, there will be makers, and there will be no ticket price standing between you and a Saturday well spent. A free two-day festival at one of the city's best civic institutions is precisely the kind of low-stakes, high-reward outing that a mid-summer weekend is built for. Bring cash for the vendors. Bring water; it's August in Alabama and the sun is undefeated.
Why does this particular weekend matter more than the average one? Because it's the summer's honest turning point. We've been candid all season that Montgomery's touring calendar ran thin through July — the big buses were elsewhere, the marquees were quiet. This weekend is the local scene answering back with its own resources: a homegrown theater company closing a beloved show, and a homegrown museum throwing open its doors for free. Neither needs a national tour to justify itself. Both are the city entertaining itself, which is honestly the truest test of whether a place has a culture or just occasionally rents one.
The move, if you want it optimized: matinee-and-market the weekend. Museum on Saturday for the festival — music, crafts, air conditioning breaks — then ASF on Sunday for the 2 p.m. Carole King send-off.
