The dog days are here, and New Orleans is doing what it always does with unbearable heat: turning it into a reason to gather. This weekend, Aug 7–9, offers a smooth-voiced R&B headliner, a beloved gallery crawl that turns Royal Street into one long block party, and — if you can hang on until Monday — a jolt of desert rock. Friday is Ella Mai's night. The British R&B singer — the "Boo'd Up" voice who helped drag slow-jam radio back into fashion — plays the Saenger Theatre on Fri Aug 7. The Saenger's plush, gilded 1927 room is a fitting setting for Mai's brand of grown-and-sultry soul; this is a night for actually listening, not just streaming her in the background of a text thread. And keep one eye on Monday. The weekend's aftershock lands Mon Aug 10, when Eagles of Death Metal — the swaggering, tongue-in-cheek rock outfit that is, famously, neither eagles nor death metal — play the House of Blues. It's a hard left turn from Friday's R&B and Saturday's gallery hop, which is exactly the point. A city that can serve you Ella Mai, a wine-in-hand art crawl, and a fuzzed-out rock show inside four days isn't showing off. It's just Tuesday. (Well, Monday.)
So how to sequence it? Start refined: Ella Mai under the Saenger's gold leaf, the kind of show you put a nice shirt on for.
