The Sweatiest, Best Weekend of the Summer Starts Now

Clear your calendar and hydrate accordingly, because the first weekend of August is about to do what it does every year: turn New Orleans into a wall-to-wall celebration and dare you to keep up. Three big things are landing on the same few days, and they run the gamut from arena rock to free jazz to an art-walk where the whole city dresses in white.

Kick it off Friday, July 31, at the Smoothie King Center, where Bryan Adams rolls in with Pat Benatar and Neil Giraldo. It's a stacked bill of exactly the kind of catalog everyone secretly knows every word to, and it's the loud, air-conditioned overture to a weekend that mostly happens outdoors in the heat.

Because the heart of it is Satchmo SummerFest, running Saturday and Sunday, August 1–2, at the New Orleans Jazz Museum in the Old U.S. Mint. It's free, it runs 11:30am to 8pm both days, and it exists to celebrate the man who gave the world its swing: Louis Armstrong. The lineup is a murderers' row of the real thing — Kermit Ruffins closing Sunday night with a Louis Armstrong tribute, the Treme Brass Band, Charmaine Neville, John Boutté, The Original Pinettes, Don Vappie & Jazz Creole, Mark Braud's All-Stars, and more.

This year the fest grows, too. 2026 adds a new "Friends of Fest" stage on Barracks Street, plus the indoor Fidelity Bank Piano Sessions stage — a blessed, climate-controlled room where you can hear the eighty-eight keys worked over without slowly poaching in the August sun. Free admission, expanded footprint, and a lineup built entirely out of people who understand exactly what Pops meant. There is no better deal in America this weekend.

Then, Saturday evening, the city changes clothes. White Linen Night takes over the Julia Street and Warehouse Arts District from 6 to 9pm — a gallery art-walk with live street music where the dress code is right there in the name: everyone wears white linen. It is New Orleans's answer to the impossible question of how to look elegant while sweating through your shirt, and the answer is to make the sweating part of the aesthetic. Galleries throw open their doors, the streets fill with music, and a few thousand people in matching pale linen turn the district into a moving painting.

Put it together and you get the essential New Orleans summer weekend: a big-ticket concert to start, two free days of Armstrong worship at the Mint, and a linen-clad art crawl in between. Loud and intimate, ticketed and free, indoors and out, uptown-slick and down-home — all of it stacked into about seventy-two hours.

Here's the honest logistics talk. It's going to be hot. It's going to be crowded. You are going to sweat through whatever you wear, linen or not. Bring water, wear good shoes, and pace yourself, because trying to do all of it at full tilt is how you end up face-down by Sunday afternoon missing Kermit's tribute set — and missing Kermit send Sunday off in Armstrong's name would be a genuine tragedy.

This is the weekend the city stops pretending it's anything other than a place that lives for music and gathering. Free jazz at the Mint, white linen on Julia Street, arena rock at the arena. No other American city does all three in one breath. Ours does it every August and calls it a Tuesday's worth of ambition crammed into a weekend.
