America's Music, Montclair's Block: The Jazz Festival Closing the Summer
If you're going to end a North Jersey summer, end it right. On Saturday, August 15, the Montclair Jazz Festival takes over Lackawanna Plaza for a free, all-day celebration that doubles as a mission statement — and it's the marquee closing event of our whole coverage window.
The festival is produced by Jazz House Kids, the Montclair-based nonprofit that has spent years turning music education into one of the state's genuine cultural engines. This year's edition — a Downtown Jamboree plus Block Party — salutes "American jazz cities," and comes with a new tie-in to the Smithsonian Institution, which tells you the ambition here isn't small-town. It's a Montclair block staking a claim to a national story.
The lineup earns the ambition. Bassist and bandleader Christian McBride brings his Big Band — big-ensemble jazz at full throttle, from one of the most decorated players of his generation. The Spanish Harlem Orchestra carries the Afro-Caribbean and salsa flame. And the Take Me to the River All-Stars roll in with a heavy dose of New Orleans royalty, featuring Cyril Neville and Big Chief Bo Dollis Jr. which means Lackawanna Plaza is about to get a direct infusion of Crescent City spirit. Big band, salsa, and Mardi Gras Indian funk on one free bill: that's a festival with a thesis.
And the thesis is stated outright. "Jazz is America's original art form, and it has something very special to teach us at this challenging time in our nation," says Melissa Walker, founder and president of Jazz House Kids. Read that line, then look at the lineup — jazz cities, a Smithsonian partnership, New Orleans and Spanish Harlem and a Newark-adjacent bass hero all sharing a Montclair afternoon — and you understand this isn't a concert with a slogan attached. The programming is the argument.
What I love about this as a scene report is how it frames the season. North Jersey's summer of free music started with NJPAC's Chambers Plaza Thursdays and Hoboken's parks, and it closes here, in Montclair, with a nonprofit that teaches kids to play putting the state's best on a plaza for anyone who wanders up. The whole arc of the season — free, civic, ambitious, local — lands in one place on August 15.
One deliciously North Jersey scheduling collision to note: the same Saturday, over in Teaneck, Debonair Music Hall has The Band Palm bringing the rock. So the region's final full summer Saturday offers a choice between big-band brilliance on a Montclair plaza and a standing-room hall across the county. That's not a conflict. That's a scene with too much going on — the best possible problem.
Bring the family, bring a blanket, bring the relative who thinks jazz is background music. Christian McBride's Big Band will disabuse them of that notion in about eight bars.
