Closing Weekend: Steel Pulse, a Whisper Folk Duo, and the Last Skank of the Fair
This is it — the final weekend of the 2026 OC Fair, and the county's live-music calendar is going out loud, quiet, and everything between. Whether you want 5,000 people singing in unison or 200 people holding their breath, Saturday and Sunday have a room for you.
The tentpole is Sunday, August 16, when the Pacific Amphitheatre closes its Summer Concert Series with a 2-Tone and reggae summit: Steel Pulse with The English Beat (and Eli-Mac). Steel Pulse are Grammy-winning Birmingham roots-reggae royalty; the English Beat are the ska-revival architects who, as noted earlier this summer, also played the Fair back on July 26 — making this their second Costa Mesa appearance of the season and closing an accidental two-night ska thread that ran the length of the Fair. It's the right band to skank the fairgrounds into the off-season.
But the closing weekend isn't only the big bowl. Over at the Constellation Room in Santa Ana, Sunday the 16th brings Penny and Sparrow, the Texas folk duo whose hushed, harmony-drunk songwriting is the exact opposite of a fairground — an intimate, close-your-eyes show for people who want to feel something quiet. The night before, Saturday the 15th, the same room hosts Gimme Gimme Disco, the traveling ABBA-fueled dance party that reliably turns the Constellation into a glitter-strobe sweatbox.
And the indie rooms keep pace: the Wayfarer in Costa Mesa closes its own weekend with veteran songwriter Jerry Joseph on Sunday, the intimate Americana counterweight to everything happening at the amphitheater across town.
So here's your closing-weekend math, all of it inside county lines: reggae royalty and ska founders under the Costa Mesa sky, a whisper-folk duo and a disco riot in Santa Ana, and a road-worn troubadour in a Costa Mesa gastropub.
