Native Flute, Didgeridoo, and a Nye Beach Sunset: Newport's Free 'Earth Tones' Show

Newport figured out something a lot of towns miss: the best stage on the coast is the one the ocean already built. The City of Newport's Summer Sound Series — three free, all-ages outdoor concerts staged around Nye Beach and the Bayfront — leans all the way into that idea, and its next installment is the one to circle. Earth Tones lands Friday, Aug 14, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at Don and Ann Davis Park, right in the historic Nye Beach district, with the sunset doing the lighting design for free.

The bill is exactly as advertised in the name: Native American flute, didgeridoo, and Andean folk music, an unusually contemplative lineup for an outdoor summer concert and a welcome one. This isn't a cover band cranking through classic rock while people order another basket of fries. It's music built for exactly this setting — long tones, open air, the Pacific throwing its own low drone in underneath. Bring a low-back beach chair and get there early; Don and Ann Davis Park is small, and "free concert at golden hour on the Newport coast" is not a secret.

Earth Tones is the middle panel of a three-part season. The series opened July 17 with A Classic Newport Evening and closes Aug 27 with Noche Latina, a deliberate spread across genres and communities that reads as a small mission statement: this coast contains multitudes, and the city's programming should too. Producing three free shows on the public dime, in a town that runs on seasonal tourism dollars, is a real commitment — the kind of thing that's easy to cut and hard to restart.

Here's why the free-and-outdoor model matters more on the coast than almost anywhere. Ticketed indoor rooms — the casino showroom, the PACs, the theaters — do essential work, but they self-select for people who already buy concert tickets. A free show at a beachfront park catches everyone else: the family on vacation, the retiree on a walk, the teenager who'd never pay for a flute-and-didgeridoo set but might stop, sit, and discover they love it. That accidental audience is where new fans come from.

So make it a plan. Dinner in Nye Beach, then walk to the park by 5:15, stake out grass, and let a summer Friday do what Newport summer Fridays do. And keep Aug 27 open for Noche Latina while you're at it.
