Free All Weekend: Silver Lake, Canyons, and the Case for Doing Nothing but Listening
The best-kept secret of a Park City summer is that you can hear live music five days a week without paying a dime, and this weekend is the proof of concept. Bring a blanket, bring a cooler that fits the rules, and let the mountain provide.
Start mid-mountain. Deer Valley's Live Music at Silver Lake puts local acts on the lawn from 1 to 4 p.m. every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from late June through Sept. 18, with lounge chairs, food trucks, local beer and yard games. This weekend's slate leads to the one to circle: on Sunday, July 12, Salt Lake fiddler and songwriter Kate MacLeod plays the lawn with a band. MacLeod is not a background act — she's a Folk Alliance "Best of the West" honoree with decades of records behind her — so getting her for the price of a chairlift ride is the kind of bargain that only makes sense in a resort town. Come Thursday the action shifts to Canyons Village, where the free Summer Concert Series runs on the Forum stage. The venue opens at 4 p.m. and music starts at 5:30. On Thursday, July 16, the bill pairs Peech with Aspen Anonda. The series continues on select Thursdays through Aug. 20, and the rules are worth memorizing before you pack: picnics and blankets welcome, low-back chairs only, no outside alcohol, no umbrellas, service animals only.
Rounding out the free circuit is Mountain Town Music, whose Friday series at the Newpark Amphitheater in Kimball Junction lets you bring a blanket, a picnic and your own spirits.
Here's why a wall of free shows matters more in Park City than almost anywhere else: this is one of the most expensive zip codes in the Mountain West, a place where a sandwich can cost what a cover charge does elsewhere. Free, outdoor, all-ages music is the thing that keeps the town's actual community — the lifties, the line cooks, the teachers, the year-rounders — inside the culture that the resorts sell. It's civic infrastructure disguised as a picnic.
So do nothing this weekend but listen. The mountains are open, the lawns are free, and Kate MacLeod on a Sunday afternoon is about as good as summer gets.
