Your Weekend, Philly: Aug 14–16
Big week, bigger weekend. The stadiums got their moment on Thursday; now the clubs take it back. Here's where to point yourself from Friday through Sunday — a spread that runs from desert boogie to a hometown record release to a French-Californian internet band and, if you're still standing Saturday, some proper heavy metal. All times are the usual "check the venue" caveat, but the bills are locked.
Thursday kickoff — Dumpstaphunk at Ardmore Music Hall (Aug 13). Technically it's the night before and technically it's out on the Main Line, not Philly-proper, but forgive us — when the Neville-family funk juggernaut Dumpstaphunk rolls through, geography is negotiable. Twin basses, New Orleans grease, and a groove that does not let up. If your weekend needs a running start, this is it.
Friday, Aug 14 — Eagles of Death Metal at Union Transfer. The name is a joke and the band is not. Jesse Hughes' greasy, hip-swinging boogie-rock — born from a friendship with Josh Homme — is pure Friday-night id: falsetto, fuzz, and songs about, roughly, having a good time. Union Transfer is the right box for it. Loud, sweaty, no thinking required.
Friday, Aug 14 — Cole Berggren (Record Release) w/ Golden Apples + Izzy True at PhilaMOCA. The connoisseur's pick. Cole Berggren steps out front for his own record-release show at the beloved former-mausoleum-turned-DIY-temple on Spring Garden. Support comes from Golden Apples, one of the city's sharpest indie-rock exports, plus Izzy True. Fifteen bucks, doors at 7:30. This is the kind of local-first bill that makes Philly Philly.
Saturday, Aug 15 — Yard Act at Underground Arts. Leeds' finest post-punk motormouths bring their whip-smart, danceable, talk-sing dispatches to the brick basement under Callowhill. Yard Act writes some of the most quotable choruses in the current UK class and plays them like a band that means to convert you. Underground Arts is the perfect low-ceilinged sweatbox for it.
Saturday, Aug 15 — Pomplamoose at Union Transfer. Complete tonal whiplash from the EODM crowd the night before, and that's the fun of it. Jack Conte and Nataly Dawn built Pomplamoose into a YouTube-era institution on inventive, meticulous covers and originals, and their live show is a nerdy, joyful clinic in arrangement. Bring the friend who doesn't usually do rock clubs.
Saturday, Aug 15 — Zeke Sky w/ Breakker, Skullovich, Astrokatz at Johnny Brenda's. For the denim-and-leather contingent: a full-throttle metal bill in Fishtown. Zeke Sky headlines with support from Breakker, Skullovich and Astrokatz — four bands, one riff-soaked night, $18.90 advance, doors at 7. If Pomplamoose is too polite for your Saturday, Frankford Avenue has you covered in the best way.
Why the deliberate whiplash? Because that's the flex of a real music city — you can chase fuzzed-out boogie, a hometown kid's debut, British post-punk, meticulous internet pop and a metal throwdown all inside 48 hours without leaving the city limits (Ardmore, we love you, we'll allow it). No festival wristband, no travel, no excuse.
Pick a lane or blow through all of them. Either way, tip your bartenders, buy the merch, and remember the bands you catch in a 250-cap room this weekend are the ones you'll brag about seeing "before." Go outside, Philly. The clubs are waiting.
