A Soccer Stadium, a Reggae Festival, and a River on Fire: Pawtucket's Biggest Weekend

This weekend, the smallest state does something it has genuinely never done before. Centreville Bank Stadium — the soccer-specific home of Rhode Island FC that opened in Pawtucket in 2025 — hosts its first-ever concert event: the inaugural Island Rhodes Music Festival, two days of reggae, funk and roots on Aug 15–16.

The lineup is not messing around for a first outing. Sublime, Slightly Stoopid, Rebelution and The Roots headline, with a deep supporting bill that includes Iration, Action Bronson, SOJA, The Original Wailers, HIRIE, DENM, Bumpin Uglies, Grateful Dub, The Expendables, Crooked Coast, Joe Samba and Beach Fly. That's a legitimate national-caliber festival poster, planted in a Pawtucket soccer stadium that a year ago didn't exist as a music venue at all.

The symbolism is hard to miss. For decades the knock on Rhode Island was that the big tours skipped us for Boston and we drove north to see them. A purpose-built stadium hosting a two-day festival with The Roots on it is the opposite of that story — it's the infrastructure catching up to the appetite. Whether Island Rhodes becomes an annual fixture depends on how this first swing lands, but the ambition alone is a milestone for the city that gave us the term "Bucket pride."

And because Rhode Island refuses to do anything by halves, the stadium spectacle collides with the city's signature ritual: WaterFire Providence stages a Basin Lighting downtown on Friday, Aug 14, braziers flaming down the middle of the three rivers from dusk to 10 p.m. If you've somehow never seen it — a hundred bonfires floating on the water, woodsmoke and world music drifting over the crowds on the riverwalk — clear an evening. It is the single most Providence thing Providence does, and it's free.

So here's the weekend, if you want the maximalist version: WaterFire Friday night downtown, then the festival gates in Pawtucket on Saturday and Sunday. Fire on the river, then bass in the stadium. A 15-minute drive between two events that, five years ago, you couldn't have stacked in the same sentence.
