Macramé, Mountains, and a Beach Sendoff: Your Aug 14–16 Weekend
The dog days are the connoisseur's season around here — the tourists are frayed, the locals know the good parking, and the calendar quietly stacks up some of the summer's most charming shows. Here's your map for August 14–16.
Friday, August 14, point the car up the hill. Crystal Bay Casino's Crown Room hosts Fleetwood Macramé, the tribute act that has become a genuine North Shore institution, for an 8 p.m., 21-and-over night of Rumours-era singalongs in that legendary state-line room. Yes, it's a tribute band. No, that does not make the Crown Room crowd any less feral about "The Chain." Tribute nights are the Crown Room's bread and butter, and they're a reliably great time precisely because everyone in the room already knows every word.
Back in Reno, Saturday, August 15 belongs to The Holland Project, where hometown trio The Electric celebrate ten years with Sad Giants and The Jackeyes — all ages, $8–$10, and, as we wrote last week, the most Reno way imaginable to mark a decade. If you want a single night that captures what this archive keeps arguing — that the local, all-ages, low-cover show is the beating heart of the scene — this is it.
Then, Sunday, August 16, close the weekend where the summer has been at its best: the sand. Concerts at Commons Beach in Tahoe City wraps our archive window with Boot Juice, the free lakefront series' good-time closer for our purposes, on the Tahoe City waterfront. It's free, it's on the lake, and there's a shuttle from the West Shore if you'd rather not fight the Sunday drive. Bring a blanket and stay for the light on the water.
Why it matters: this weekend is a perfect cross-section of the region's whole appeal — a casino tribute night at 6,200 feet, an all-ages anniversary in a Midtown-adjacent nonprofit, and a free beach show, all inside 48 hours and all reachable from one home base. There aren't many places where your Friday-Saturday-Sunday can swing that widely without ever leaving the neighborhood, loosely defined.
A note for the ambitious: doing all three means two trips up and down the hill in one weekend. It's worth it — the drive between Reno and the North Shore is one of the great commutes in American music-going — but respect the passes, respect the altitude, and don't treat Friday's Crown Room like it won't cost you Saturday.
Three shows, two elevations, one unbeatable weekend. The Biggest Little City's summer doesn't fade in August. It just gets better at hiding its best nights from everyone who isn't paying attention. Consider yourself paying attention.
