Now or Never: Reno's Festival Grounds Get Their Big Swing This Saturday
Some weekends you pick a show. This one, you pick a strategy. Saturday, July 11, the J Resort Festival Grounds in downtown Reno host the Now or Never Music Festival, a single-day, alt-rock-and-emo throwback with a lineup engineered to reduce a certain slice of millennials to a puddle: Phantogram, Gym Class Heroes, The Paradox, and The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus.
That's a smart, specific bill. Phantogram — the Saratoga Springs duo whose glassy, bass-heavy electro-rock has soundtracked a decade of prestige-TV needle drops — is the headliner with actual artistic weight, and their live show trades on exactly the kind of low-end you feel in your sternum. Gym Class Heroes bring the 2000s radio nostalgia; Red Jumpsuit Apparatus supply the "oh my god, this song" screamo singalong. Doors are, which means a full afternoon-to-night arc on the downtown grounds.
Why it matters: for years Reno's festival ambitions lived at casinos or 90 minutes out in the desert. A purpose-built downtown festival site — walkable from midtown, ringed by the actual city — is a different proposition. It says the Biggest Little City thinks it can hold a real one-day festival crowd inside its own grid, and Saturday is the stress test.
If wall-of-sound nostalgia isn't your speed, the weekend has range. Tuesday already gave us KALEO's roaring guitars at the Grand Sierra Resort's Grand Theatre; Artown keeps the Robert Z. Hawkins Amphitheater at Bartley Ranch humming with the Kronos Quartet (July 9) and jazz titan Wynton Marsalis (July 10), before the Glenn Miller Orchestra brings big-band swing there on Saturday the 12th. And up at the lake, the free Concerts at Commons Beach series in Tahoe City resumes Sunday, July 12, with the Moga Family Band on the sand.
So: downtown for the mosh, Bartley Ranch for the strings, or a Tahoe beach for the free Sunday reset. There is no wrong answer, only a scheduling problem — which, in July around here, is the best kind of problem to have.
A note for planners: Now or Never is a downtown event with rideshare-and-walk logistics; leave the car if you can, because parking downtown on a festival Saturday is its own extreme sport. Tickets were still on sale as of this writing via the festival's site.
