Dierks Bentley Brings a Bluegrass Ringer to CMAC on Saturday
Here's the thing about a Dierks Bentley show: the guy has spent 20 years being underestimated as a hat-act hitmaker, and every so often he stacks a bill that quietly reminds you he's a bluegrass obsessive who just happens to sell out amphitheaters. Saturday, July 11, at CMAC, he's doing exactly that.
Because look at who's opening. Ricky Skaggs & Kentucky Thunder — that Ricky Skaggs, the 15-time Grammy winner, the man who has forgotten more about mandolin than most touring acts will ever learn — is on this bill. That's not an undercard. That's a co-headliner wearing a supporting credit out of politeness. If you show up late and miss Skaggs picking, you have made a genuine error you'll regret in the merch line.
Also on the ticket: Kaitlin Butts, the Oklahoma singer-songwriter who's been building a devoted following on grit and personality, the kind of opener who converts skeptics between the beer stand and their seat. Get there early. Get there for her.
The venue is the reason this all works. CMAC — down in Canandaigua, about 30 miles southeast — is the Finger Lakes' marquee shed: roughly 5,000 covered seats, a lawn that holds close to 10,000, and the acoustic openness that a night of banjo, fiddle, and pedal steel absolutely demands. Bentley's catalog swings from arena-country anthems ("Somewhere on a Beach," "Drunk on a Plane") to the straight-ahead bluegrass of his Up on the Ridge material, and the lawn at dusk is the correct habitat for both.
Why it matters: this is the season's first genuinely big-tent country night in the region, and it's programmed with actual taste. A lesser promoter books Bentley with a generic radio opener and calls it a day. Pairing him with Skaggs signals that somebody understands the through-line from Bill Monroe to modern Nashville, and trusts a Rochester-area crowd to understand it too. We do. We contain multitudes and at least three people who own a resonator guitar.
Practical notes, lightly held: gates, set times, and the lawn-versus-pavilion math are the usual amphitheater variables, so. Bring a blanket for the lawn, bring cash for parking, and bring patience for the post-show crawl back up Route 332 — the one universal constant of a sold-out shed night.

Show up for Butts, stay rooted for Skaggs, and let Bentley close the thing under a Finger Lakes sky. Miss Skaggs and you'll be that person at brunch Sunday nodding along while everyone else describes the mandolin solo. Don't be that person.
