Hoochenanny Roars Back to Fairport With Free Fridays, Whiskey, and Modest Mouse
The single biggest live-music event of the Rochester summer isn't happening in Rochester. It's happening eight miles east, in Fairport, where the Hoochenanny Festival takes over Center Park West from August 14 to 16 — a whiskey-and-music weekend that has quietly become the region's marquee August blowout, and this year it's rolling out the news that's got everyone's attention: Friday is free.
That's the headline organizers led with, and it's a genuinely big deal. Free general admission on Friday, August 14, lowers the drawbridge on a festival that pairs a serious spirits program with a lineup that reads like a very good radio dial. Co-owner Sean McCarthy framed it plainly: "With the addition of free general admission on Friday and an incredible music and whiskey lineup, this year is all about elevating the overall experience for our guests." Translation: they want the whole city to walk in, and they've removed the excuse.
The music earns the trip on its own. Friday is anchored by Lit — yes, "My Own Worst Enemy," yes, you already know every word — with Toadies, Cracker, and Rudy Nuño & The Broadcasters filling out a day built for people who came of age when alt-rock ruled the FM band. Saturday goes bigger and rootsier: My Morning Jacket headlines, with Guster, Tommy Brunett's All-Star Cavalcade of Scoundrels, and rising guitar phenom Grace Bowers. Then Sunday closes with Modest Mouse up top, plus Amigo the Devil, Karina Rykman, and — the local-pride kicker — Rochester's own Joywave, coming home to a hometown-adjacent field.
There's an ethos underneath the party. Co-founder Tommy Brunett described the 2025 edition as "a true celebration of craftsmanship across music, art, food, and spirits, all rooted in our ethos of Cultivating the Uncommon" — which is festival-founder language, sure, but it also describes what the thing actually feels like on the ground: a curated blend of good pours, good food, and bands who take the stage seriously.
Why it matters: Rochester's summer heavyweights mostly happen at CMAC, 30 miles out, on nights built around a single headliner. Hoochenanny is the opposite proposition — a three-day, multi-stage, walkable-from-the-village festival that keeps its money and its crowd in the metro area. And putting Joywave on that Sunday bill, one field over from where they grew up, is exactly the kind of regional loyalty that makes a festival feel like ours rather than a franchise that happened to land here.
