The Belly Up Just Booked the Best August in the County

Solana Beach is technically not San Diego proper, and the Belly Up does not care, because the Belly Up has spent decades proving that the best roadhouse in Southern California can sit inside a converted Quonset hut a stone's throw from the train tracks. Its August calendar is the flex to end all flexes.

Look at this run. Aug. 1: post-rock architects Tortoise, with Coffin Prick opening. Aug. 3: Eagles of Death Metal, riff-first and grinning. Aug. 4: the velvet-voiced Corinne Bailey Rae. Aug. 5: Leeds post-punks Yard Act with Bambara. Somewhere in there (Aug. 6) a Talking Heads tribute from Start Making Sense, for the purists who want to dance their way out of a psycho killer. And on Aug. 11, folk-punk institution Ani DiFranco takes the same stage.

That's a genre map of the last forty years of independent music, booked into a single room over a single fortnight. The Belly Up's whole trick has always been range — the sense that the same sound system that flatters a whisper can also survive a wall of fuzz — and this stretch is that thesis, stress-tested.

There's a reason touring acts route through here even when the bigger sheds beckon up the freeway. The room seats a few hundred, the sightlines are honest, and the crowd actually listens. For a band, that's not a step down from an amphitheater — it's a palate cleanser.
