This Weekend: Black Heart Procession Take the Casbah for Two Nights

Cancel your plans. The most San Diego event of the summer is a two-night hometown stand, and it belongs to one of the city's most quietly influential bands.

Friday, Aug. 14 & Saturday, Aug. 15 — The Black Heart Procession, The Casbah. Born in 1997 as the darker offshoot of Three Mile Pilot, the duo of Pall Jenkins and Tobias Nathaniel built a catalog of slow, cinematic, gorgeously bleak songs that made them cult heroes far beyond Kettner Boulevard. The band spent this year reintroducing itself — a remastered reissue of its 1998 debut 1 landed via Solid Brass Records back in February — and now they're planting two full nights at the club that helped raise them. The bills differ: Young Destroyers and John Meeks open Friday; Imaad Wasif and Sen K on Saturday. Serious fans will want both.

Saturday, Aug. 15 — Qiensave, Soda Bar. If you need a jolt between Procession nights, the Salinas cumbia-rock crew brings the heat up El Cajon Boulevard.

Sunday, Aug. 16 — Tijuana Panthers, The Casbah. The Casbah doesn't let you catch your breath. Long Beach surf-punks Tijuana Panthers close the weekend with Ricky opening — sunburnt, hooky, and loud.

Two nights of one of the best bands this city ever produced, capped by a Sunday singalong — all in the same low-ceilinged room where so much of this scene's mythology was written. That's not a weekend. That's a love letter to the Casbah, with San Diego's own return address on the envelope.

Bring earplugs Friday. You'll want your hearing intact for Saturday.
