The Quiet Week Is a SOhO Week: Monophonics, BettySoo, and the Art of the Small Room

Not every week is a Bowl week, and thank god for that. With the amphitheater between big weekends, the center of gravity slides back downtown to the top of a State Street staircase — which is exactly where a lot of the region's best listening happens anyway.

SOhO Restaurant & Music Club carries the load. Texas songwriter BettySoo plays the 300-cap room on Monday, July 21 — the sort of clear-eyed, quietly devastating folk booking that rewards a room where you can hear a pin drop and a lyric land. Then Friday, July 25, the club flips the mood entirely with Monophonics, the Bay Area psych-soul heavyweights whose live show is all fuzz, falsetto, and horn-section muscle. If you've only ever seen them in a bigger house, SOhO's low ceiling and close quarters are a different, sweatier animal — the band practically in your lap.

And keep July 31 open: Tina Schlieske brings her road-tested rock-and-soul bark to the same stage to close out the month. It's a reminder that SOhO's real value isn't the headliner name recognition — it's the range. Grateful Dead tributes, jazz virtuosos, Texas folk, psych-soul, blues-rock, all inside a single month, all up the same flight of stairs.

The concrete detail: at 300 capacity, SOhO is small enough that a good night feels like a secret and a great one feels like a conspiracy. There's no bad seat because there are barely any seats. You stand, you lean on the rail, you're eight feet from the snare.

Why does a between-the-headliners week deserve its own dispatch? Because the health of a music town isn't measured by its biggest nights — it's measured by its Tuesdays. Any market can sell a Bowl show. It takes a real scene to fill a club for a Texas folksinger and a psych-soul band four days apart, in July, when everyone could be at the beach instead.
