The Library Is Now a Record Label: SML Logjam and Shreveport's DIY Roster

The most interesting A&R operation in Shreveport this summer isn't a label or a booking agency. It's the public library. Through Aug. 31, Shreve Memorial Library is accepting submissions from local musicians for SML Logjam, its homegrown streaming platform — a free, curated jukebox of northwest Louisiana artists that anyone with a library card can stream, and that quietly functions as an archive of a scene that too often goes undocumented.

The terms are refreshingly concrete: albums must be complete, released within the past ten years, and either at least fifteen minutes long or built from four or more songs. Submissions opened June 1 and run through the end of August. In other words, right now, in coffee shops and back bedrooms across the metro, working musicians are deciding whether the record they made counts — and the answer, per the library, is that it does.

The roster already tells a story. SML Logjam features local acts like Dexter Duran and the Port City Sound, Annie Washington, Beaux Atkins, Sweet Nay, and Tengo Lee, among others — a spread of genres that mirrors the market itself, refusing to specialize. This isn't a vanity project. It's a city taking its own current output seriously enough to catalog it, which is more than most scenes manage for their living artists as opposed to their dead legends.

Here's why a submission deadline is worth a whole article. Shreveport is a city with a museum-grade past — the Hayride, Lead Belly, Kenny Wayne Shepherd — and the risk with that kind of history is that the present starts to feel like a footnote. A platform that puts a 2024 bedroom record on the same shelf as the archive is a small, stubborn correction: it says the scene isn't over, it's ongoing, and here's the evidence you can stream tonight.

For local musicians reading this: you have until Aug. 31, the bar is a completed record and four songs, and the reward is a permanent, publicly accessible home for your work with your city's name on it. That's a better deal than most streaming services offer, and the algorithm is a librarian.
