This Weekend: Big-Band Jazz, "Breakfast at Tiffany's," and Two Rooms Worth Your Night
Some weekends the calendar makes you choose. This one (Aug 13–16) it just makes you plan, because between the free Levitt lawn and a ticketed all-ages show on the west side, Sioux Falls is running two genuinely good options and expecting you to be an adult about it.
Thursday, Aug 13 at Levitt: Fellowship Jazz Center Orchestra ft. Alyssa Allgood. A big-band jazz orchestra with a guest vocalist is a specific pleasure — the kind of full, brassy, seventeen-people-swinging sound you almost never get for free on a lawn. Come at 7, settle in, let the horns do the work.
Friday, Aug 14 — and now you choose. Two strong shows, same night.
Option one, free and outdoors: Deep Blue Something at Levitt. Yes, the "Breakfast at Tiffany's" band. Yes, they will play it, and yes, several thousand people will sing the chorus back at the shell, and no, you should not be too cool for that. A '90s-radio band on a free lawn on a summer Friday is a near-perfect use of a Friday.
Option two, ticketed and indoors: The Crane Wives at The District. The Michigan indie-folk band has built one of the more devoted followings in the genre, the kind of crowd that knows every word and means them. It's an all-ages show at 4521 West Empire Place — doors 7, show 8 — and it's exactly the touring-club booking The District exists to land. If your Friday leans earnest and harmony-driven rather than nostalgic and singalong, this is your room.
Saturday, Aug 15 — Dustbowl Revival at Levitt. Close the weekend back on the lawn with a band that fuses roots, soul, and brass into something built for exactly this setting. A Saturday-night Levitt crowd is the loosest, friendliest audience the series draws, and a band this danceable is going to make the grass earn its keep.
So the honest planner's version: Thursday for the big band, Saturday for the roots-soul, and a real decision on Friday. If you've got a carful of people who want to belt a '90s hit under an open sky for free, that's Deep Blue Something on the lawn. If you'd rather stand in a club with people who'll cry at a Crane Wives bridge, buy the District ticket. Both are correct. Neither requires leaving town.
The usual Levitt reminders apply: get there before the good grass goes, food and drink are on-site, and keep half an eye on a mid-August sky that can turn dramatic without much warning. For The District, it's a ticket and an 8 p.m. downbeat, so plan the west-side drive accordingly.
What's easy to lose in the logistics is how unusual this even is. A mid-size city, a single mid-August weekend, and the problem is too many good shows — a free big-band jazz night, a free '90s-radio singalong, a beloved touring indie band in a real club, and a roots-soul dance party on the grass. That's not a town getting its music secondhand. That's a town with a Friday-night decision worth having. Make it, and see you out there.
