The Hall CP Is Coming Back — and College Park Needs It To

College Park is about to get one of its rooms back. The Hall CP — the food-hall-and-stage hybrid on Hotel Drive that spent the early 2020s as the closest thing the UMD side of the county had to a proper music-and-events venue — has new owners and a fall reopening date, with renovations running through the summer.

The details, per reporting in the Hyattsville Wire: the venue has been acquired by the Lakelander Group, a College Park-based company formed in 2025, which applied earlier this year to transfer the liquor license. The Hall originally opened in 2020, developed by UMD alum and War Horse Cities chief Scott Plank, at 4656 Hotel Drive beside the Hotel at the University of Maryland. In its first run it became enough of a destination to draw the occasional famous face — Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce reportedly among them — before going quiet.

Why this matters more than a normal restaurant reopening: geography and scarcity. Prince George's has civic and collegiate stages — the Clarice Smith Center at UMD, Publick Playhouse over in Cheverly — but it is thin on the mid-sized, come-as-you-are rooms where a touring band and a walk-up dinner crowd can share a night. The Hall filled that niche once. Its return matters because there isn't a deep bench behind it. And its location is about to get more valuable, not less: it sits near a future Purple Line stop and a major new graduate-housing development, which is a fancy way of saying the foot traffic is coming whether the room is open or not.

There's a cautionary tale sitting one county over that explains the anxiety here. Villain & Saint, the Bethesda rock club a generation of us treated as a second living room, closed in 2019 after four years — and nothing replaced it. When a suburban music room goes dark, it tends to stay dark; the real estate is worth more as almost anything else. So when one comes back from the brink instead, that's not a lifestyle blurb. That's the scene holding a line.

The open question is programming. The new ownership has been public about reopening as a dining and events venue but has said little, so far, about how central live music will be to the reboot. The old Hall's calendar mixed DJ nights, watch parties, and live sets; whether Lakelander leans back into original music or plays it safe with a food-and-sports model will tell you a lot about how much appetite College Park's operators have for the risky, unglamorous work of booking bands.

For now, the honest verdict is cautious optimism. A room is being renovated instead of demolished. In the arithmetic of suburban venues — where the losses stick and the wins are rare — that alone is worth a headline. We'll be there opening night with a notebook and a healthy skepticism.
