Billy Idol and Devo Turn the Amphitheater Into 1981 This Saturday
Some Saturdays you get one good show. This Saturday, Aug. 15, the Empower FCU Amphitheater at Lakeview hands you a double bill that reads like a raid on your older cousin's cassette shelf: Billy Idol, on the gloriously-titled "It's A Nice Day To…Tour Again!," with Devo opening. This one's confirmed across the listings — no single-source shrug required. Idol and the spud-boys, on the lake, under an open sky. Go.
Let's talk about the pairing, because it's smarter than it looks. Billy Idol is the sneer that outlived the era that produced it — a punk kid who figured out how to make menace danceable and has been coasting on that exact chemistry, and a genuinely killer live band, for four decades. Devo is the other side of that same coin: art-school subversives who dressed the collapse of civilization in matching jumpsuits and energy domes and somehow charted while doing it. Put them on one lakeshore stage and you've got the whole nervous, twitchy, gorgeous spectrum of what "new wave" actually meant before nostalgia flattened it into a Spotify playlist. This is not a heritage act going through the motions on either end of the bill.
And the room is built for it. The Empower FCU Amphitheater seats about 5,000 under the pavilion with roughly 12,500 more on the lawn — ~17,500 all told — and a show like this wants that scale. Idol's whole thing is arena-sized gestures; Devo's whole thing is precision spectacle. Both play better big. Get lawn tickets, get there while there's still light on the water, and let the sun set behind the stage while somebody yells "Rebel Yell." That's the assignment.
Fair warning that Saturday is a genuine traffic event around here, and not only because of this show. Just up Oswego Road in Liverpool, Sharkey's kicks off its two-day Endless Fires Festival the very same weekend — Circle Jerks, American Nightmare, and a hardcore lineup a mile deep on Saturday, Three 6 Mafia and Madball on Sunday. Central New York is, apparently, choosing violence and volume this particular weekend, and I respect it enormously. Whichever field you pick, plan your exit. Lakeview is one-road-in-one-road-out, and you will not be the only person leaving.
If your Saturday's already spoken for, the calendar around it is loaded too. Thursday the 13th, Sebastian Bach howls through Sharkey's Summer Stage with Dystopica. Friday, Ripe plays Paper Mill Island over in Baldwinsville. Sunday, Slightly Stoopid closes the orchard season at Beak & Skiff in LaFayette. It is, frankly, an absurd stretch of nights for a market our size.
But Saturday belongs to the lake. Billy Idol still means it, Devo still means it differently, and the amphitheater — top-50 in the world for ticket sales, and it shows on nights like this — is exactly where two 1980s survivors should get to prove they were right all along.
It really is a nice day. Go get sneered at.
