Endless Fires: The Weekend Central New York Gets Genuinely Loud

Here's a sentence I didn't expect to write about a bar-and-grill in Liverpool: national music press spent this spring covering a Syracuse-area festival. Brooklyn Vegan wrote it up. So did Knotfest, Lambgoat, and theprp. The reason is the Endless Fires Festival — a brand-new two-day heavy-music gathering landing at Sharkey's Summer Stage on Aug. 15–16, and it might be the most ambitious thing anyone's booked in this metro all year.

Look at the anchors. Day one, Saturday the 15th: Circle Jerks, American Nightmare, and Comeback Kid headlining a hardcore lineup that runs deep — Deadguy, Bleeding Through, Weekend Nachos, Through the Eyes of the Dead, Fury of Five, Madball's whole world of adjacent bands, and something like three dozen underground and regional acts stacked from doors to curfew. Day two, Sunday the 16th, pivots hard and brilliant: Three 6 Mafia and Project Pat headlining a Memphis-rap-meets-metalcore bill alongside Emmure, Madball, Lil Wyte, E.Town Concrete, Wisdom In Chains, Crown Of Thornz and dozens more. Hardcore Saturday, Memphis-and-mosh Sunday. Whoever built this thing understood exactly what they were doing.

That combination — a legacy hardcore summit next to a Three 6 Mafia set — is the whole story. This isn't a genre festival; it's a bet that the crowd for Circle Jerks and the crowd for Project Pat are increasingly the same crowd, and that Central New York will show up for both if you put them on one field. On the evidence of the lineup depth alone, someone with real money and real taste is behind this.

And the venue is the punchline that keeps landing. Sharkey's is, on paper, a suburban bar and grill at 7240 Oswego Rd with a listed capacity around 2,000. In practice its outdoor Summer Stage has spent this whole season booking national metal, hardcore, and hip-hop — Sebastian Bach plays the same stage just two nights before Endless Fires opens — and now it's hosting a festival that got covered coast to coast. There's something deeply Syracuse about the biggest heavy-music weekend of the year happening at a place better known, to some, for its burgers.

Practical notes, because this is two full days and the lineups are enormous. Set times will run long and deep — plan to be there early if the smaller bands are why you bought in, because a bill this stacked means the underground acts play in daylight. Hydrate, because August on an outdoor stage is no joke. And expect company on the roads: the same weekend, Billy Idol and Devo play the Empower FCU Amphitheater on the 15th, so the whole northwest side of the metro is a music event Saturday night.

The bigger picture is what I keep coming back to. A market our size does not, historically, launch destination heavy-music festivals that pull national coverage. This one did, on its first try, at a bar and grill. If Endless Fires works — and the lineup says it should — it's a template for what this scene can be when somebody's brave enough to book it.

Bring earplugs. Bring stamina. Salt City's about to prove it can hang with anybody.
