Cowboys, Aliens and a Stacked Local Bill: 6th & Polk, July 31
The most Topeka thing about Friday, July 31 at 6th & Polk isn't the touring headliner — it's the seven local and regional acts stacked underneath it. Touring hip-hop duo Dread & $trange, made up of AJ the Dread and A-G Strange, roll through on their "Astronauts Tour: Cowboys & Aliens" run, but the support bill is the tell: Nödda Clüe, Forrest Savage, Reup Von Wolfgang, Syndrillical, Kreepy Isotope, and Kyo Youngin. Doors at 8, show at 9, ten bucks at the door, all ages, BYOB.
That's a lot of names for a Friday in the capital, and it's the kind of deep local card that only materializes when a scene has a room willing to host it. Fair warning on the fine print: as of the roundups, this show was confirmed via the Facebook event but hadn't yet surfaced on 6th & Polk's own site widget — so before you build your whole night around a specific stage time.
If a BYOB all-ages rap show isn't your speed, NOTO has a softer landing the same night. Compass Point at Dirty Girl Adventures hosts The Beer Bellies with East of Abilene, gates at 6, twelve-dollar cover — a straight-ahead bar-rock-and-country evening in the yard, catered and comfortable. Two venues, a mile or so apart, running completely different Friday nights: that's the range Topeka can suddenly offer.
Here's why the 6th & Polk card is the one to watch. A touring act is nice, but a touring act surrounded by seven area artists is a scene flexing — it means local rappers and producers have somewhere to plug into a real bill instead of scrounging for house shows or driving to KC. The room that Black Chamber DIY and Sound Peak Studios veterans built is doing precisely what a DIY-to-legit venue is supposed to do: turning a national tour stop into a showcase for the people who actually live here. That's the multiplier a fixed address gives a music economy.
So: the yard for the beer-and-boots crowd, the room for the cowboys and aliens and everybody opening for them. Either way, Topeka's got a Friday. Bring cash and, for 6th & Polk, your own cooler.
