The Weekend: Corridos Fill the Rialto, and a Desert Legend Looms

Here's a fact to hang your monsoon on: this Friday the biggest, most historic room downtown — the 1920 Rialto Theatre — belongs not to a legacy rock act or a national indie darling, but to Elías Medina, playing to Tucson's booming young corridos audience. Aug. 14, at the Rialto. If you want proof that this city's musical center of gravity sits an hour from the border, look no further than which act commands the marquee on a prime August Friday. It isn't close.

That's the headline, but the weekend has range. Down at Club Congress the same night, Tucson's own Foxtide works the black box, followed by the PURR! dance night for the after-crowd. Saturday the 15th, Club Congress hands the early slot to Alec André, while 191 Toole runs its Bonner Black weekend and, on Saturday, the "REVEAL: A Blazing Burlesque Revue." Between the corridos, the local indie, the burlesque and the mariachi still humming on the restaurant patios, you could build a genuinely deranged and completely wonderful three-night bender without leaving a half-mile radius downtown.

But save some energy, because the real event is next week, and it's the most Tucson booking of the entire summer. On Thursday, Aug. 20, Howe Gelb plays 191 Toole with Max Gomez (support from Slant Can). Gelb is Giant Sand — the founding architect of the whole Tucson desert-rock lineage, the man whose four-decade experiments in dust and drone seeded Calexico and half the "Southwestern" bands you've ever loved. That he still plays the little all-ages warehouse off the train tracks, rather than some reunion-tour shed, tells you everything about how this scene actually holds itself together: at eye level, in the same rooms as everyone else.

So, marching orders. This weekend, go watch a corridos star fill a hundred-year-old vaudeville house and understand what Tucson is right now. Then buy your ticket for the 20th and go watch the man who helped invent what Tucson has always been.
